Travel – Tehri Garhwal Divided Into Security Zones Ahead of Char Dham Pilgrimage
Travel – The Char Dham Yatra is set to begin on April 23, with authorities intensifying preparations to manage the expected surge of devotees. In Tehri Garhwal, which forms a major part of the pilgrimage route, officials have introduced a detailed security and administrative framework to ensure a smooth journey for visitors.

District Split Into Three Super Zones for Better Oversight
Tehri Garhwal district, considered one of the most extensive stretches of the yatra route, has been reorganised into three super zones. Each of these zones will be supervised by officers holding the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police. According to senior officials, the decision has been taken due to the geographical spread and sensitivity of the area, which witnesses heavy pilgrim movement during the season.
In addition to the super zones, authorities have further divided the district into 11 zones and 30 sectors. Police personnel have been deployed across all these divisions, with clear responsibilities assigned to maintain order and assist travellers throughout the pilgrimage.
Focus on Pilgrim Assistance and Conduct
Officials have emphasised the importance of respectful and supportive behaviour towards pilgrims arriving from across India and abroad. Police teams have been instructed to maintain a courteous approach while handling crowds and assisting visitors.
To strengthen on-ground response capabilities, personnel have also undergone basic first-aid training. This step is aimed at providing immediate help in case of health emergencies, especially in remote and high-altitude areas where medical access can be limited.
Registrations Approach 1.8 Million Mark
The Char Dham Yatra continues to attract massive interest, with registrations nearing 1.8 million even before the official start. Data shared by the tourism department shows significant participation across all major destinations.
Among the registered pilgrims, Kedarnath has received the highest number of bookings, followed by Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri. Hemkund Sahib has also recorded a steady number of registrations. The figures highlight the continued spiritual appeal of the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit.
Essential Supplies and Facilities Assured
Addressing concerns related to logistics, the state government has confirmed that essential supplies will remain uninterrupted during the yatra. Arrangements have been made to ensure the availability of cooking gas, food items, and other basic necessities along the route.
Officials have stated that these preparations are designed to avoid shortages during peak travel periods, when demand rises sharply due to the large influx of devotees.
Infrastructure and Route Inspections Completed
In the lead-up to the pilgrimage, senior leadership has conducted on-ground inspections of key routes and facilities. Special attention has been given to the Kedarnath Highway and other important transit points to assess road conditions, safety measures, and traveller amenities.
Authorities have indicated that these inspections are part of a broader effort to ensure that infrastructure is fully prepared to handle the seasonal rush.
Broader Safety and Traffic Management Measures
Beyond physical infrastructure, the administration has also focused on improving overall coordination. Meetings have been held to review security deployment in mountainous areas, particularly along narrow roads and forest-adjacent routes.
Traffic management plans have been strengthened to reduce congestion, while emergency medical services are being positioned strategically along the routes. These steps aim to provide timely assistance and minimise disruptions during the yatra period.
Government Extends Invitation to Devotees
With only days remaining before the temple gates open, the state government has invited pilgrims to undertake the journey with confidence. Officials have expressed readiness to host visitors from across the country and abroad, assuring that arrangements are in place for a safe and organised pilgrimage experience.
The Char Dham Yatra, regarded as one of India’s most significant spiritual journeys, is expected to see a large turnout this year as well, supported by enhanced planning and improved facilities across the region.
