Election – Udhayanidhi Stalin Criticizes Centre, Expands Welfare Promises Ahead of Polls

Election –  Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Saturday intensified his criticism of the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of restricting financial support and interfering with the State’s autonomy. Speaking at a campaign gathering in Gobichettipalayam, he also outlined a series of welfare commitments as the State approaches Assembly elections.

Allegations Over Withheld Education Funds

Addressing party workers and supporters, Udhayanidhi alleged that the Centre had not released nearly ₹3,000 crore allocated for Tamil Nadu’s education sector. He argued that such actions reflect a broader pattern of unequal treatment toward states not governed by the BJP. According to him, the withholding of funds has affected key public services and undermined cooperative federalism.

He further stated that the State government has consistently raised its concerns but has yet to receive a satisfactory response from the Centre. The issue, he suggested, has become a significant talking point in the election campaign.

Opposition to Delimitation Exercise

Turning to national issues, Udhayanidhi criticized the Centre’s proposed delimitation exercise, describing it as a move that could alter political representation unfavorably for certain states. He noted that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was among the first to voice strong objections to the proposal.

Udhayanidhi also claimed that the INDIA bloc played a crucial role in opposing related legislative efforts in Parliament. He asserted that the lack of majority support led to the Bill’s failure in the Lok Sabha, which he described as a notable outcome for the opposition alliance.

Focus on Welfare Initiatives

Shifting attention to governance, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted several welfare programs introduced by the State government. He emphasized that these initiatives have had a direct impact on improving the quality of life for many residents.

One of the key schemes he discussed was the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, which provides monthly financial assistance to women. He announced that the benefit amount would be increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 if the party returns to power. Currently, he said, over 1.3 crore women are receiving support under the program.

Expansion of Education Support Programs

Udhayanidhi also outlined plans to strengthen educational initiatives. He stated that the government’s breakfast scheme for schoolchildren would be extended to include students up to Class VIII. The move is aimed at improving both nutrition and attendance in government schools.

In addition, he promised the reintroduction of a free laptop distribution program for college students. According to him, more than 35 lakh students are expected to benefit from this initiative, which is intended to enhance digital access and support academic progress.

Introduction of New Household Support Scheme

Among the new proposals, Udhayanidhi introduced the ‘Illatharasi’ scheme. Under this initiative, women who do not pay income tax would receive coupons worth ₹8,000. These coupons could be used to purchase or replace essential household appliances.

He described the scheme as part of a broader effort to support families and reduce financial burdens, particularly for women managing household responsibilities.

Accusations Against Political Rivals

The Deputy Chief Minister also accused the BJP and its ally AIADMK of attempting to obstruct welfare programs through legal means. He claimed that such actions are politically motivated and aimed at slowing down development initiatives.

Despite these challenges, he assured supporters that the government remains committed to continuing its welfare-focused approach and would push forward with its policies if re-elected.
