Politics – Amit Shah Assures Relief for Gorkha Leaders Ahead of Polls

Politics – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that legal cases filed against leaders and members of the Gorkha community during past protests would be withdrawn if the Bharatiya Janata Party forms the next government in West Bengal. His remarks came during an election outreach focused on the Darjeeling hills.

Virtual Address Due to Weather Disruption

Shah was scheduled to attend a public meeting in Lebong, located in Darjeeling, but could not travel due to adverse weather conditions. Instead, he addressed supporters through a video message from Malda. In his message, he expressed regret over his absence and assured the audience that he would visit the region soon.

He announced that he would attend a previously planned rally in Sukna, near Kurseong, on April 21. During that visit, he said, the party would present a detailed roadmap for development in the hill regions and outline key initiatives for local residents.

Commitment to Address Gorkha Concerns

Focusing on the long-standing Gorkha issue, Shah said that resolving it would be a priority for the BJP government. He promised that cases registered against Gorkha leaders and workers, particularly those linked to earlier agitations, would be withdrawn.

He also stated that the party aims to find a lasting and peaceful solution to the concerns of the Gorkha community within the framework of the Constitution. According to him, addressing these issues would be among the first steps taken after assuming power.

Criticism of State Government

Shah accused the current state administration of failing to cooperate in efforts to resolve the matter. He claimed that several meetings held in Delhi over the past year and a half did not receive participation from the state leadership.

He further alleged that even after appointing a mediator to engage with all stakeholders, the state government did not extend support to the process. According to Shah, this lack of engagement delayed progress on addressing the demands of the Gorkha population.

Law and Order and Political Promises

The Union minister also criticized what he described as a culture of political intimidation in the state. He alleged that earlier governments had used law enforcement agencies to restrict public movement and that this approach continued under the current leadership.

He said that, if elected, the BJP would work to eliminate issues such as illegal infiltration, criminal networks, and what he termed as misuse of police power. He reiterated that cases filed against individuals from the Gorkha community would be reviewed and withdrawn promptly.

Historical Background of the Gorkhaland Movement

The demand for a separate Gorkhaland state, raised by Nepali-speaking residents of the Darjeeling hills, has been a significant political issue for decades. The region has witnessed multiple phases of unrest, including violent protests in the past.

In 2011, the formation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration aimed to provide a level of self-governance in the hills. However, tensions persisted, with renewed protests occurring as recently as 2017.

Political Alignments in the Hills

Regional political dynamics have continued to evolve over time. Parties such as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and the Gorkha National Liberation Front have shifted alliances between larger national and state parties.

For the upcoming elections, the ruling Trinamool Congress has entered into a seat-sharing arrangement with a regional faction led by Anit Thapa. Under this agreement, key constituencies in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong have been allocated to the regional partner.

Meanwhile, the BJP has secured support from another faction of Gorkha leadership and is contesting seats in the region independently.

Upcoming Election Schedule

Darjeeling is set to vote in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on April 23. The second phase will follow on April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for early May.

The outcome in the hill regions is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the broader political landscape of the state.
