Traffic – Highway Diversions in Manmad Disrupt Movement for Hours
Traffic – Vehicular movement in Manmad, a key transit point in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, faced major disruption on Tuesday evening as traffic diversions remained in force for nearly 13 hours. The restrictions were introduced to manage large gatherings and processions held to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Normal traffic flow on the Indore–Pune and Pune–Indore National Highways was restored later in the night after authorities lifted the diversions.

Long Queues Across Major Routes
The diversion plan led to extended traffic congestion across several crucial stretches passing through Manmad. Vehicles heading towards prominent destinations such as Malegaon and Shirdi were particularly affected. Commuters reported long waiting times as queues of cars, buses, and heavy vehicles stretched across key junctions throughout the day.
The situation became more challenging during peak hours when the volume of vehicles increased significantly. Many drivers had to take alternative routes, which were also crowded due to the sudden shift in traffic flow.
Measures Taken for Crowd Management
Local authorities and police had implemented the diversion strategy as a precautionary measure to ensure smooth conduct of Ambedkar Jayanti events. Large processions and public gatherings were organised across the city, drawing significant participation from residents and visitors.
Officials stated that the decision to divert traffic was necessary to maintain safety and prevent overcrowding in sensitive areas. Police personnel were deployed at multiple points to guide motorists and manage the movement of vehicles during the celebrations.
Commuters Face Delays and Inconvenience
Despite efforts by authorities, the prolonged restrictions caused inconvenience to daily commuters and long-distance travelers. Several passengers travelling for work or personal reasons experienced delays, while transport services also faced disruptions.
Drivers reported that the lack of clear real-time updates on traffic conditions added to their difficulties. Some were forced to wait for hours before being able to resume their journeys once the restrictions were eased.
Traffic Restored After Event Conclusion
By late evening, as the celebrations concluded and crowds began to disperse, authorities gradually lifted the diversions. Traffic movement returned to normal on both the Indore–Pune and Pune–Indore National Highways, bringing relief to stranded commuters.
Officials confirmed that the situation was brought under control without any major incidents. They also highlighted the importance of such measures in ensuring public safety during large-scale events.
Need for Better Planning in Future
The incident has once again highlighted the need for improved traffic planning and timely communication during major public events. Experts suggest that advance notifications, better signage, and digital updates could help reduce inconvenience for commuters in similar situations.
While the celebrations were conducted peacefully, the extended disruption in traffic has raised concerns among frequent travelers who rely on these highways for daily movement.
