Empowerment – Parliament Special Session to Highlight Women’s Leadership Push
Empowerment – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat has indicated that the upcoming three-day special session of Parliament, beginning April 16, will center on strengthening national consensus around women’s empowerment. Party leaders stressed that the discussions will underline the importance of recent legislative measures aimed at enhancing women’s role in governance and public life.
Focus on Women’s Representation in Governance
Speaking at a press briefing in Jamnagar, Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma said the session is expected to reinforce a collective commitment toward gender inclusion in democratic institutions. He noted that such efforts are essential for ensuring a more balanced and representative system of governance.
Vishwakarma highlighted the significance of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which was approved by Parliament in 2023. The law proposes a 33 percent reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. According to him, the measure goes beyond numerical representation and seeks to create meaningful opportunities for women to participate directly in decision-making processes.
Tribute to Constitutional Ideals and Cultural Values
At the beginning of his address, Vishwakarma paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, emphasizing that India’s commitment to women’s empowerment is deeply rooted in constitutional principles as well as long-standing cultural traditions.
He remarked that women have historically held a respected position in Indian society, and empowering them remains a crucial factor in the country’s overall development. He added that meaningful progress cannot be achieved unless women, who constitute nearly half of the population, are actively involved in leadership roles across sectors.
Policy Measures Supporting Women’s Progress
Referring to recent policy initiatives, Vishwakarma pointed to decisions such as the abolition of triple talaq and the expansion of permanent roles for women in the armed forces. He said these steps have contributed to strengthening women’s status and ensuring greater equality in society.
He further connected these efforts with the broader national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’, which identifies women as one of the key pillars of development. According to him, achieving long-term national goals will depend significantly on increasing women’s participation in leadership and governance.
Women’s Achievements Across Sectors
Highlighting the growing presence of women in diverse fields, Vishwakarma noted that Indian women are making notable contributions in areas ranging from space exploration and sports to entrepreneurship and defense services.
He also mentioned several government-backed initiatives designed to promote financial independence among women. Schemes such as Drone Didi, Lakhpati Didi, and Ujjwala have played a role in improving economic opportunities and living standards, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Gujarat’s Role in Advancing Women-Centric Initiatives
Turning to the state’s contributions, Vishwakarma said Gujarat has consistently been proactive in implementing policies that support women’s empowerment. He pointed out that women in the state are actively engaged in sectors like dairy farming and animal husbandry, contributing significantly to the local economy.
He also highlighted the impact of initiatives such as Sakhi Mandals and the Mudra Yojana, which have enabled many women to become self-reliant entrepreneurs. Additionally, services like the Abhayam 181 helpline have been instrumental in enhancing safety and support systems for women across the state.
