Elections – Ballygunge Set for Close Contest as Parties Recalibrate Strategy
Elections – The Ballygunge Assembly constituency in South Kolkata is witnessing a closely watched electoral contest, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) locked in a competitive race. The seat, known for its urban and affluent voter base, has emerged as one of the key constituencies in West Bengal’s upcoming elections.

A Constituency with a Distinct Urban Profile
Ballygunge, designated as Assembly constituency number 161, stands apart from many other regions in West Bengal due to its predominantly urban character. The area is home to a large population of professionals, business owners, and educated residents. With a population of around two lakh, the constituency also has a significant Muslim voter base, which plays an important role in shaping electoral outcomes.
Unlike rural constituencies, where local issues often dominate, Ballygunge voters tend to focus on governance, infrastructure, and broader policy matters. This gives the seat a unique political identity within the state.
Leadership Shift After a Long-Standing Presence
For years, Ballygunge was represented by Subrata Mukherjee, a senior TMC leader who secured consecutive victories in 2011, 2016, and 2021. His passing marked a turning point for the constituency, creating space for new leadership and altering established political equations.
In the 2016 elections, Mukherjee won by a margin of over 15,000 votes, while in 2021, he expanded that lead significantly, securing more than 75,000 votes over his nearest rival. His absence has introduced an element of unpredictability in the current contest.
TMC Fields Experienced Candidate
The TMC has nominated Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, a veteran leader with extensive political experience, in an attempt to retain control of the seat. The party’s decision reflects a strategic shift following the 2022 bypoll, which was won by Babul Supriyo after he switched from the BJP to the TMC.
Chattopadhyay’s candidacy is seen as an effort to consolidate the party’s traditional support base while adapting to changing voter expectations. His long association with state politics is expected to play a key role in the campaign.
BJP Bets on a New Face
The BJP has introduced Dr Shatrupa as its candidate, positioning her as a fresh alternative for urban voters. The party appears to be targeting Ballygunge’s educated middle class by presenting a candidate who represents change and new leadership.
This move aligns with the BJP’s broader strategy of strengthening its presence in urban constituencies, where it aims to convert growing support into electoral gains.
Electoral Roll Revision Sparks Debate
The ongoing election process has also been marked by controversy surrounding revisions to the electoral rolls. Under the Special Intensive Revision exercise, a number of voter entries were removed, leading to disagreements between major political parties.
Reports indicate that over 6,000 voters were found ineligible out of nearly 24,000 reviewed entries in Ballygunge. Both the TMC and BJP have raised concerns about the impact of these changes, adding another layer of complexity to the contest.
Importance for Major Political Parties
Ballygunge holds strategic importance for all major parties. For the TMC, retaining the seat is crucial to maintaining its dominance in Kolkata. For the BJP, a victory here would carry symbolic value, signaling its ability to break into urban strongholds traditionally held by the ruling party.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M), which secured around 30 percent of the vote in the 2022 bypoll, remains a factor. The key question is whether it can sustain its support base or whether its voters will shift towards one of the larger parties.
Election Timeline and Broader Context
Voting in West Bengal is scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results expected on May 4. The elections follow the 2021 Assembly polls, where the TMC won a decisive mandate with 213 seats, while the BJP emerged as the main opposition with 77 seats.
As campaigning intensifies, Ballygunge is set to remain a focal point, reflecting the broader political dynamics unfolding across the state.
