Election – Garima Saikia Garg Votes Alone Amid Ongoing Justice Fight
Election – Garima Saikia Garg returned to the polling booth on Thursday to cast her vote in the Assam Assembly elections, continuing a personal tradition that this time carried a sense of absence. Unlike previous elections, she was not accompanied by her husband, the late music legend Zubeen Garg, whose sudden death last year continues to be a subject of investigation.

Voting Despite Health Concerns
Speaking briefly to reporters after voting in the Dispur constituency in Guwahati, Garima recalled how voting had always been a shared activity. In earlier years, the couple would arrive together at polling stations, reflecting both civic participation and a shared public presence.
Despite recently facing health issues, she ensured her participation in the democratic process. She had been discharged from a hospital just a day earlier after being treated for blood pressure-related complications. Accompanied by her sister-in-law Palme Borthakur, she emphasized the importance of voting, stating that illness should not deter citizens from fulfilling their civic responsibilities.
Her appearance at the polling booth highlighted a message of commitment, even in challenging personal circumstances.
Continuing Demand for Justice
Garima also reiterated her determination to seek justice in connection with her husband’s death. She noted that the family remains hopeful for a timely resolution as legal proceedings move forward. According to her, the pursuit of justice is ongoing, and there is confidence that the process will deliver results without undue delay.
The case has drawn significant attention across Assam, not only due to the public stature of the late singer but also because of the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have been under pressure to ensure transparency and accountability as the investigation progresses.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Zubeen Garg, aged 52, passed away under unclear circumstances on September 19 while swimming in the sea during a visit to Singapore. He had traveled there to perform at the North East India Festival, an event celebrating the region’s culture and talent.
Following the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Assam launched a probe that led to the arrest of seven individuals. Those taken into custody include event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg, two personal security officers, a bandmate, and another singer associated with the event. All accused are currently in judicial custody.
The trial began last month in a fast-track court, indicating an attempt by authorities to expedite the legal process. The developments in the courtroom are being closely followed by both the public and political stakeholders.
Political Relevance in Elections
The demand for justice in the case has also found a place in the political narrative surrounding the Assam elections. Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have raised the issue prominently during their campaigns.
The matter gained further traction after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly suggested that the singer’s death may have involved a conspiracy. This statement intensified public debate and brought additional focus to the investigation.
Congress has included the assurance of justice for the late artist among its key electoral promises. The party pledged that, if elected, it would work towards resolving the case within a defined timeframe, reflecting the emotional and political weight the issue carries among voters.
A Lasting Public Impact
Zubeen Garg’s influence extended far beyond music, making him a widely admired figure, especially among younger audiences. His sudden passing left many supporters in disbelief, and the circumstances surrounding his death have only deepened public concern.
As the elections unfold, Garima Saikia Garg’s participation serves as both a personal gesture and a reminder of the broader issues that continue to resonate with voters. Her presence at the polling booth, despite health challenges and personal loss, reflects a commitment to democratic values while underscoring an ongoing quest for answers.
