Technology – The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is prompting educators and policymakers to rethink how individuals engage with technology, with experts now emphasizing the importance of preserving human creativity alongside digital convenience.
Need for Mental Discipline in AI Age
Speaking at a one-day summit focused on artificial intelligence at Banaras Hindu University, Prof Manindra Agarwal, Director of IIT Kanpur, introduced the idea of a “Cognitive Gym.” He highlighted that as AI tools make information instantly accessible, there is a growing risk of mental complacency. According to him, consistent mental effort and intellectual engagement are essential to sustain originality and creative thinking in an increasingly automated environment.
He explained that just as physical exercise strengthens the body, structured mental challenges are necessary to keep the mind active. Without such efforts, reliance on AI could gradually reduce independent thinking क्षमता, making individuals passive consumers of technology rather than active thinkers.
AI Development and Emerging Opportunities
Prof Agarwal noted that the evolution of artificial intelligence has been gradual but impactful. He pointed out that newly established Centres of Excellence across the country are shaping the future direction of AI research and application. These institutions are expected to play a critical role in integrating innovation with practical solutions.
The summit, titled “AdhyAI: AI Summit,” brought together over 350 participants from leading institutions nationwide. Discussions largely centered on how artificial intelligence can contribute to national development while maintaining ethical and intellectual balance.
Government Focus on Inclusive Technology
Addressing the gathering virtually, Uttar Pradesh’s Minister for IT and Electronics, Sunil Kumar Sharma, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to leveraging AI for inclusive growth. He emphasized that artificial intelligence could help bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural areas, by offering solutions tailored to local challenges.
He also highlighted the broader vision of building a developed nation through technological empowerment, ensuring that advancements in AI benefit all sections of society rather than a limited segment.
Academic Leaders Stress Responsible AI Use
Several academic leaders at the event echoed the need for responsible and thoughtful adoption of artificial intelligence. BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi urged students to approach AI with awareness and accountability. He cautioned against becoming overly dependent on technology, which could lead to a decline in critical thinking abilities.
Similarly, IIT BHU Director Prof Amit Patra expressed confidence in India’s potential to emerge as a global leader in the AI sector. He pointed to the country’s strong talent pool and growing technological ecosystem as key advantages.
India’s Position as Emerging AI Hub
Omkar Rai, former Director General of Software Technology Parks of India, described India’s transition toward becoming a global AI hub. He attributed this shift to the country’s vast data resources and skilled workforce, which together create a strong foundation for innovation.
Other speakers, including Prof Sanjay Srivastava and Prof AK Tyagi, emphasized the importance of maintaining human values while advancing AI technologies. They also highlighted the need to develop AI tools in Indian languages to ensure accessibility at the grassroots level.
Youth Perspective and National Vision
Representing the youth voice, Abhay Pratap Singh encouraged young innovators to align their technical expertise with a broader national vision. He stressed that technological progress should not be isolated from societal needs and urged students to adopt a “nation-first” approach in their work.
The discussions at the summit collectively underscored a central message: while artificial intelligence offers immense opportunities, preserving human intellect, creativity, and ethical responsibility remains equally vital in shaping the future.
