Politics – Samrat Choudhary Sworn In As Bihar Chief Minister
Politics – Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, marking a significant political shift in the state. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) at a ceremony held at Lok Bhawan in Patna.

A Historic First for BJP in Bihar
With this development, Choudhary becomes the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to assume the chief minister’s position in Bihar. The ceremony drew the presence of several prominent figures from the National Democratic Alliance, reflecting the importance of the transition. Among those attending were Union ministers J P Nadda and Chirag Paswan, along with senior leaders and NDA legislators.
Transition Following Nitish Kumar’s Exit
The leadership change follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, who had been at the helm of Bihar’s government for nearly two decades. He stepped down from the chief minister’s role after being elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier this week. Shortly after his resignation, the BJP Legislature Party convened and unanimously selected Samrat Choudhary as its leader, paving the way for his appointment.
Composition of the New Council of Ministers
Alongside Choudhary, JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav also took the oath as members of the Council of Ministers. Their inclusion signals continuity within the alliance, even as leadership responsibilities shift. The ceremony maintained a formal and structured tone, highlighting stability within the NDA framework in the state.
Political Journey of Samrat Choudhary
Samrat Choudhary’s political career spans more than three decades, beginning in the early 1990s. His initial rise came during his tenure as agriculture minister in the Rabri Devi-led government in 1999. However, he had to step down at the time due to procedural requirements related to legislative membership and age constraints.
After parting ways with the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Choudhary later joined the Janata Dal (United), aligning himself with Nitish Kumar. His political trajectory continued to evolve as he took on various responsibilities, including serving as Minister of Urban Development and Housing in 2014.
Rise Through the NDA Ranks
In recent years, Choudhary has steadily climbed the ranks within the NDA setup. He was appointed as Minister of Panchayati Raj in 2021, further strengthening his administrative experience. In 2024, he assumed the role of Deputy Chief Minister, positioning himself as a key figure in Bihar’s governance structure.
His elevation to the chief minister’s post is seen as a culmination of his long political journey and growing influence within the BJP and the broader alliance.
Looking Ahead
The transition comes at a time when Bihar continues to focus on development, governance reforms, and political stability. Observers note that the new leadership will be closely watched for its policy direction and administrative priorities in the coming months.
As the NDA consolidates its position in the state, the appointment of Samrat Choudhary signals both continuity and change. While experienced leaders remain part of the government, the shift in leadership marks a new phase in Bihar’s political landscape.
