Recent developments in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and within key political groups indicate a period of adjustment and negotiation.
Efforts to Build Consensus in BMC Standing Committee
After securing control of the BMC with support from the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, the Bharatiya Janata Party faced challenges in distributing responsibilities within the influential standing committee. This committee plays a crucial role in approving financial proposals, making it central to the corporation’s operations.
Representation in the committee is determined by the strength of each party’s elected corporators, which makes cooperation essential. However, reaching a clear agreement among allies and opposition members proved difficult. To ease tensions and encourage dialogue, Mohit Kamboj, a close associate of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, took an informal approach. This arrangement has raised concerns among party legislators, many of whom belong to the Maratha community.
Several MLAs fear that the absence of strong Maratha representation in day-to-day decision-making could weaken the party’s connection with its core supporters. There is increasing pressure within the party to reassess its strategy and ensure broader representation to maintain its political footing in the state.
Sharad Pawar Remains Active Despite Health Issues
Veteran leader Sharad Pawar continues to demonstrate commitment to public life, even as he deals with health challenges. At 86, he has acknowledged frequent hospital visits due to ongoing health concerns, particularly related to respiratory issues. Despite this, his political engagement has not diminished.
Recently, he attended the general body meeting of the Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Pune, signaling his continued involvement in key institutional activities. He has also shared plans to travel across Maharashtra in the coming weeks.
During this proposed tour, Pawar intends to interact with farmers and other stakeholders affected by broader economic pressures, including the impact of the West Asia conflict on agriculture and trade. His decision to undertake regular visits across the state has surprised some party members, given his health condition, but it also reflects his enduring role as a central figure in Maharashtra politics.
