Travel – Gaza Surfers Find Rare Moments of Relief Amid Ongoing Crisis
Travel – In the middle of continuing uncertainty and destruction across the Gaza Strip, a small group of Palestinian surfers is still finding brief moments of peace along the Mediterranean coastline. While much of daily life remains dominated by shortages, displacement, and fear, the sea has become one of the few places where some residents feel a temporary sense of freedom.

Surfing Continues Despite Severe Restrictions
Only a handful of surfers remain active in Gaza today, largely because surfboards and repair materials are nearly impossible to obtain. Tahseen Abu Assi, a surfer from Gaza City, said he protected his surfboard through every stage of displacement during the war, knowing there would be no chance to replace it if it were damaged.
According to Abu Assi, surfboards have not entered Gaza for many years because restrictions imposed on goods entering the territory include sports equipment and similar products. As a result, local surfers rely heavily on old boards that are repeatedly repaired and carefully preserved.
Recently, Abu Assi joined two other surfers near Gaza City’s port to ride unusually strong Mediterranean waves. Among them was Khalil Abu Jiab, who celebrated while surfing by lifting his arms in excitement as waves rolled toward the shore.
Dangerous Waters Along Gaza’s Coast
Sea activity in Gaza has become increasingly risky since the conflict intensified. International organizations have reported incidents involving fishermen and civilians facing danger both onshore and in coastal waters. Restrictions imposed over the past year have also limited access to the sea for fishing, swimming, and recreational activities.
Northern and southern Gaza waters remain especially dangerous due to military patrols and restrictions. Even in central Gaza near Gaza City, entering the sea carries significant risks for local residents.
Despite these dangers, some surfers say they are unwilling to abandon the sport. Abu Assi explained that even during heavy bombardment and periods of intense fighting, a few enthusiasts continued going into the water whenever conditions allowed.
Rare Waves Bring Brief Escapes
Surfing opportunities in Gaza are limited because the Mediterranean waves along the coast are not consistently strong enough for the sport. For that reason, local surfers quickly head to the beach whenever suitable waves appear.
According to surfers in Gaza City, those moments provide emotional relief from the stress and hardship surrounding everyday life. Many describe the activity as one of the few remaining outlets that offers a sense of calm and normalcy during prolonged instability.
The temporary ceasefire that came into effect earlier eased some fighting across the enclave, although violence and airstrikes have continued in several areas. Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaching ceasefire terms during the fragile truce.
Humanitarian Challenges Continue Across Gaza
The conflict began after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and the capture of hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Since then, Gaza has experienced extensive military operations and severe destruction.
Health officials in Gaza report tens of thousands of deaths and injuries since the war began. Large parts of the territory’s infrastructure have been heavily damaged, including hospitals, residential neighborhoods, and essential public services.
Residents across Gaza continue to face major shortages of food, medical treatment, clean drinking water, and shelter. Displacement has affected most families in the territory, forcing many to move repeatedly while searching for safer areas.
For Gaza’s remaining surfers, however, the sea still offers a brief escape from daily pressures. They say that whenever strong waves arrive, everything else is temporarily forgotten as they return to the water for a few moments of relief and normal life.
