Datia By-Election – Peaceful Voting Continues as Turnout Crosses 32 Percent by Noon
Datia By-Election – Polling for the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh continued without any major disruption on Thursday, with voters turning out steadily since the polling process began early in the morning. According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission of India, voter turnout reached 32.53 percent by 11 am, reflecting a consistent increase from the 12.94 percent recorded by 9 am. Authorities confirmed that voting was progressing smoothly under tight security arrangements across the constituency.
Voting Process Remains Smooth Across the Constituency
Polling started at 7 am at all designated booths after officials completed mock polling exercises before voting commenced. Datia Collector Swapnil Wankhade said the election process had remained peaceful throughout the morning, with no reports of disturbances from any polling station.
He informed that minor technical issues involving one Control Unit, one Ballot Unit, and one VVPAT machine were detected before polling began. The equipment was replaced promptly under CCTV surveillance and in the presence of representatives from all contesting political parties, ensuring that the voting process continued without significant delay.
Security Measures Strengthened at Polling Stations
The district administration has deployed security personnel across all 291 polling stations to maintain order and facilitate smooth polling. Officials stated that every polling location is under close observation, while a centrally operated control room is continuously monitoring live CCTV feeds from across the constituency.
According to the administration, no law-and-order incidents had been reported during the initial hours of voting. Sector officers and election staff remained stationed throughout the constituency to address any operational issues and ensure compliance with election guidelines.
Electoral Roll and Polling Infrastructure
The District Election Office reported that 2,20,410 eligible voters are registered to participate in the by-election. The electorate includes 1,16,116 male voters, 1,04,284 female voters, and 10 voters registered under the other gender category.
Among the 291 polling stations, 185 are located in rural areas, while 106 are situated in urban locations. Election authorities have identified 233 polling stations as critical and 28 as vulnerable, prompting enhanced security deployment and additional monitoring measures at these locations.
To improve coordination, the entire Assembly constituency has been divided into 36 sectors, with a dedicated Sector Officer assigned to supervise polling arrangements and respond to any issues that may arise during the day.
Polling to Continue Until Evening
Voting will continue until 6 pm, allowing eligible voters to cast their ballots throughout the day. Election officials have appealed to residents to participate in the democratic process while following instructions issued at polling stations.
The counting of votes is scheduled for August 3, when the outcome of the by-election will be announced.
Reason Behind the By-Election
The Datia Assembly by-election was necessitated after the seat became vacant following the disqualification of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti on April 2. The contest has attracted attention as both major political parties seek to secure the constituency.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Ashutosh Tiwari as its candidate, while the Congress has fielded Ghanshyam Singh. The result is expected to determine who will represent the constituency in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
