Buddhism – Senior Sri Lankan Monk Arrested in Alleged Child Abuse Case
Buddhism – Sri Lankan police have taken into custody a prominent Buddhist monk accused of sexually abusing an underage girl, in what authorities describe as one of the most significant criminal investigations involving a religious figure in the country in recent years.
The suspect, 71-year-old Pallegama Hemarathana, was arrested on Saturday while receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. Investigators say the alleged abuse involved an 11-year-old girl and reportedly took place in 2022 at a respected Buddhist temple complex in Anuradhapura, a historic city located about 200 kilometers north of the capital.
Investigation Focuses on Historic Temple Site
According to police officials, the monk serves as the chief priest of the temple where the alleged incident is believed to have occurred. Authorities confirmed that the case is currently under judicial review and that further legal action will depend on directions issued by the magistrate handling the investigation.
The monk is expected to be produced before court in the coming days as the inquiry continues.
Police also stated that the victim’s mother was arrested on allegations of assisting and facilitating the suspected offence. Officials have not yet released additional details regarding her exact involvement in the case.
Court Earlier Imposed Travel Restrictions
The arrest came shortly after a local court in Anuradhapura issued an overseas travel ban against the monk. The restriction was imposed on Friday as part of the ongoing criminal proceedings.
The case has drawn widespread public attention because of the monk’s senior religious standing and influence within Sri Lanka’s Buddhist community. While the country has witnessed previous allegations involving abuse by clergy members, authorities and observers note that this is among the highest-profile accusations involving a senior monk.
Religious Significance Adds Public Attention
Pallegama Hemarathana holds a key position in several important Buddhist institutions across the country. He is known as the chief custodian of a sacred tree believed to have originated from a sapling of the Bodhi tree in India, under which Lord Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago.
In addition to that role, he oversees eight respected temples situated along a major Buddhist pilgrimage route visited by thousands of devotees every year.
The allegations have sparked concern among sections of the public and religious followers, particularly due to the monk’s influence and longstanding association with sacred religious sites.

Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies have not disclosed further evidence related to the accusations, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the involvement of a minor. Officials have emphasized that judicial procedures will determine the next steps in the case.
