MediaFreedom – Congress Slams Assam CM Over Newspaper Burning Incident

MediaFreedom –  The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has sharply criticised the recent incident in Sivasagar where copies of the Assamese newspaper Asomiya Pratidin were set on fire, holding the state leadership accountable for the growing hostility towards the media.

Allegations Against State Leadership

Speaking at a press briefing in Khanapara, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi said the prevailing political environment in Assam has increasingly turned adverse for journalists. He accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of repeatedly singling out specific media organisations and portraying them negatively in public discourse.

According to Gogoi, such actions have contributed to an atmosphere where incidents like the burning of newspapers can occur. He stated that the Chief Minister must take responsibility for the situation, arguing that public remarks targeting media outlets have emboldened individuals to act against them.

Concerns Over Treatment of Journalists

Gogoi further questioned the conduct of the Chief Minister when faced with scrutiny from journalists. He maintained that asking questions is a fundamental duty of the press, and responding to them is equally important for those in power.

He alleged that instead of addressing concerns, the Chief Minister often names media houses and their owners publicly. This, he said, has led to a broader pattern where members of the ruling party, including ministers and party workers, have allegedly engaged in actions against journalists.

The Congress leader also claimed that there have been instances of journalists facing threats, physical attacks, and even the use of tear gas by police during coverage of events.

Claims of a Larger Pattern

Describing the Sivasagar episode as more than an isolated act, Gogoi suggested that it reflects a wider and more organised trend. He expressed concern that such incidents could continue if corrective steps are not taken.

He warned media organisations to remain vigilant, noting that today one publication has been targeted, but others could face similar situations in the future. According to him, such developments are detrimental to democratic values and press independence.

Criticism of Official Response

Gogoi also expressed dissatisfaction with the state government’s response to the incident. He said that a stronger and more immediate reaction was expected from a constitutional authority.

He pointed out that no clear action plan or firm statement was issued within a critical time frame, which, in his view, raised questions about the seriousness of the administration in addressing attacks on the media.

Political Allegations Against BJP

Turning his focus to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gogoi accused the party of promoting individuals allegedly linked to illegal activities. He claimed that deserving senior leaders are being sidelined while others with questionable backgrounds are gaining prominence.

These allegations, he said, reflect deeper issues within the party’s functioning and candidate selection process.

Election Campaign and Opposition Strategy

Referring to a recent opposition rally held in Sarbhog, Gogoi described the event as successful and indicative of growing coordination among opposition parties. He noted that earlier finalisation of alliances could have allowed for more extensive campaigning.

With limited time available due to the election schedule, he said party leaders are focusing on their respective constituencies while planning additional joint rallies in the coming days.

Questions on Election Commission Functioning

Gogoi also raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission. He referred to reports of Congress workers facing difficulties in certain districts, including Sonitpur.

Additionally, he questioned the visibility of ruling party campaign materials in Guwahati compared to restrictions allegedly faced by opposition workers. He called for a review of whether officials involved in the electoral process are maintaining neutrality.

The APCC leader also pointed to administrative changes in other states during elections, suggesting that similar scrutiny should be applied in Assam to ensure a fair process.
