Fuel – Oil Companies Assure Steady Supply Amid Rumour-Driven Concerns
Fuel – State-run oil marketing companies on Wednesday moved to calm public concerns by confirming that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country. The clarification comes amid a surge of misleading messages on social media that triggered anxiety and prompted some people to stock up on fuel unnecessarily.
Oil Firms Dismiss Shortage Claims
Indian Oil Corporation, the country’s largest fuel retailer, stated that its nationwide network of outlets is functioning normally and has sufficient stocks to meet demand. The company emphasized that fuel availability remains stable and warned that unverified information could lead to avoidable disruptions in supply patterns.
Similarly, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd rejected claims of shortages in certain regions, describing them as baseless. The company highlighted that India continues to maintain adequate reserves of crude oil and refined fuels, including petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel. It also noted that supply chains across the country are operating without interruption.
Appeal to Avoid Panic Buying
Fuel retailers collectively urged citizens to rely only on official updates and refrain from panic buying. According to them, sudden spikes in demand caused by fear-driven purchases can strain logistics temporarily, even when supplies are sufficient.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd echoed similar sentiments, assuring that petrol, diesel, and LPG stocks are stable and distribution systems are running smoothly. The company advised consumers to continue their usual consumption habits and not be influenced by rumours circulating online.
Global Tensions and Supply Adjustments
The reassurances come at a time when geopolitical tensions in West Asia have affected global energy markets. Disruptions in crude oil, liquefied natural gas, and LPG supply chains have raised concerns worldwide. However, Indian officials indicated that the country’s diversified sourcing strategy has helped maintain steady inflows of crude oil from regions such as West Africa, Latin America, and the United States.
While crude oil supplies remain secure, some impact has been observed in the natural gas segment. Interruptions in supplies from Qatar, one of India’s key LNG suppliers, have led authorities to prioritize gas distribution for domestic consumers and compressed natural gas users. Certain industrial sectors, including fertilizer production, have experienced limited supply adjustments as a result.
LPG Supply Faces Greater Pressure
Among all fuel categories, liquefied petroleum gas has been the most affected due to India’s reliance on imports for a significant portion of its demand. A large share of LPG imports typically comes from Gulf nations, where current disruptions have reduced availability.
To manage the situation effectively, the government has taken steps to prioritize LPG distribution for household consumption. At the same time, usage by commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants has been curtailed to ensure that domestic needs are fully met.
Government and Industry Coordination
Officials stressed that close coordination between the government and oil companies is helping maintain balance in supply and demand. Strategic reserves, diversified import sources, and efficient logistics are playing a key role in ensuring that essential fuels remain accessible to consumers without interruption.
Authorities also reiterated that there is no need for concern, as the country’s energy infrastructure is well-equipped to handle temporary global disruptions. Public cooperation, particularly avoiding unnecessary stockpiling, will further support smooth distribution across regions.
