Elections – Assam Scrutiny Confirms 776 Valid Candidates Across 124 Seats
Elections – The scrutiny process for nomination papers in Assam’s upcoming विधानसभा elections has confirmed the validity of hundreds of candidates, marking a significant step forward in the electoral process. Officials stated that after a detailed examination, nomination papers of 776 candidates across 124 constituencies have been accepted as valid.

Scrutiny Process Nears Completion
According to information shared by the Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the verification of nomination documents has been successfully completed in most constituencies. However, scrutiny for two seats—Barpeta (SC) and Dhekiajuli—has been postponed and is scheduled to resume on the morning of March 25.
Out of the total 126 constituencies in the state, verification has concluded for 124. Authorities confirmed that a total of 815 candidates had submitted 1,389 nomination papers for the 2026 Assembly elections. After careful review, 776 candidates have cleared the scrutiny stage so far.
Withdrawal Deadline Approaches
Candidates who wish to withdraw from the electoral race have a limited window to do so. The Election Commission has set March 26, 2026, until 3 PM as the final deadline for withdrawal of candidature. This stage is expected to further refine the list of contestants before the final ballot is prepared.
Political Activity Gains Momentum
With the nomination phase now closed in Assam, along with Kerala and Puducherry, political activity across these regions has intensified. Parties have begun mobilizing support and strengthening their campaigns ahead of polling day.
In Assam, a notable development was the filing of nomination papers by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi. He is contesting from the Jorhat Legislative Assembly constituency as the candidate of the Indian National Congress, backed by alliance partners.
Gaurav Gogoi’s Nomination and Outreach
Gaurav Gogoi submitted his nomination papers at the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Jorhat, accompanied by a large number of supporters. The event was marked by a public rally, reflecting growing political engagement in the region.
Before filing his nomination, Gogoi paid respects to his father, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, along with his grandparents, at his residence. He reiterated his commitment to public service and pledged to uphold the values associated with his family’s political legacy.
In a gesture aimed at promoting unity and inclusiveness, he visited several religious places in Jorhat, including a gurdwara, temple, namghar, mosque, and church, seeking blessings and conveying a message of communal harmony.
Election Schedule and Key Contest
Polling for the Assam Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the final results will determine the political direction of the state.
The electoral contest is expected to be closely watched, with the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government facing a challenge from the Congress and its allies. The current government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is aiming for a third consecutive term in power.
With the scrutiny phase largely completed and campaigns gaining pace, Assam is entering a crucial period leading up to the मतदान day, where voters will decide the composition of the 126-member legislative assembly.
