Accused Returns to Custody Shortly After Release

Aslam Qureshi, also known as Chamda, who had spent over two months in judicial custody, was released from Bhopal Central Jail late on Wednesday after securing bail. However, his freedom was short-lived. Acting on a detailed report submitted by the Jahangirabad Police, district authorities invoked the NSA against him within 24 hours, leading to his re-detention on Thursday evening.

Officials confirmed that the decision was taken to ensure public order and prevent any further unlawful activity linked to the case.

Police and Administration Justify NSA Invocation

Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar confirmed that the accused has been placed under preventive detention following the imposition of the NSA. He added that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is handling the probe, is in the process of submitting a supplementary charge sheet in court.

State cabinet minister and local MLA Vishwas Sarang defended the move, stating that strict action would continue against individuals involved in illegal slaughter and trafficking of banned meat. He emphasized that enforcement agencies are committed to upholding the law without exception.

Background of the December Seizure

The case dates back to December 17, 2025, when authorities intercepted a container near the State Police Headquarters in Bhopal’s Jahangirabad area. Upon inspection, officials recovered approximately 26.5 tonnes of meat packed in multiple consignments. The vehicle was reportedly en route to Mumbai.

Initial investigations linked the seized consignment to a slaughterhouse operating in the Jinsi locality under a public-private partnership model, allegedly managed by Qureshi.

Forensic Findings and Arrests

Samples from the seized meat were sent for laboratory analysis. A veterinary laboratory in Mathura later confirmed that the meat belonged to cow or its progeny, the slaughter and sale of which are strictly prohibited under Madhya Pradesh law.

Following the confirmation in January 2026, police arrested Qureshi along with the truck driver, identified as Mohd Shoiab, on January 8. Both individuals were subsequently booked under relevant provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act, 2004, which includes strict penalties for possession, transport, and sale of prohibited meat.

Additionally, charges under criminal conspiracy provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita were also filed against the accused.

Legal Proceedings and Defence Claims

The SIT has already submitted a detailed charge sheet running close to 500 pages. However, legal representatives of the accused have raised objections, arguing that the investigation remains incomplete. They pointed out that a report from the National Meat Research Institute in Hyderabad has not yet been included in the official documents.

The defence has also questioned the reliability of the evidence, alleging possible contamination of the seized samples and inconsistencies between different laboratory findings. These claims are expected to be examined during the trial proceedings.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The accused’s brief release on bail had sparked protests and strong reactions from certain groups, prompting authorities to act swiftly. Officials maintain that all actions taken are within the framework of law and aimed at maintaining order.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities indicating that further developments, including additional legal filings, may follow in the coming weeks.
