Oscars – Veteran actor Sean Penn added another accolade to his celebrated career after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, even though he was not present to receive the honor in person during Sunday night’s ceremony.

Award Accepted on Penn’s Behalf

Actor Kieran Culkin stepped onto the stage at the Academy Awards to accept the trophy on Penn’s behalf. The presenter informed the audience that Penn was unable to attend the event because he was currently overseas. While delivering brief remarks, Culkin lightened the moment with a touch of humor, saying Penn could not attend “or perhaps chose not to,” before accepting the award.

The moment drew laughter from the audience as Culkin held the Oscar statuette and acknowledged the absent winner.

Recognition for Role in ‘One Battle After Another’

Penn received the award for his performance as Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw in the film One Battle After Another, directed by filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. The film has been widely discussed during the awards season for its performances and direction.

This victory marks the third Academy Award win of Penn’s career. The actor has long been regarded as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished performers, known for taking on challenging and complex roles across multiple decades.

A Career Marked by Major Acting Honors

Penn previously won the Best Actor Oscar twice. His first Academy Award came in 2004 for his powerful performance in Mystic River. He earned his second in 2009 for portraying civil rights leader Harvey Milk in the biographical drama Milk.

In addition to his wins, Penn has been nominated several times by the Academy. His earlier nominations include performances in Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, and I Am Sam, each of which earned critical acclaim.

Over the years, his filmography has demonstrated a wide range of acting abilities, from emotionally intense dramas to politically driven narratives.

Strong Awards Season Momentum

Penn’s Oscar victory followed a successful run earlier in the awards season. In February, he secured the Best Supporting Actor award for the same role at both the BAFTA Film Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Interestingly, Penn was not present at either of those ceremonies as well. Despite his absence, his performance continued to receive strong recognition from major industry voting bodies.

Awards analysts had already considered him a strong contender for the Oscar following those earlier wins.

Competition in a Competitive Category

The Best Supporting Actor category this year featured a competitive group of nominees. Penn was nominated alongside Benicio del Toro, Stellan Skarsgard, Delroy Lindo, and Jacob Elordi.

Each actor delivered notable performances in their respective films, making the category one of the most closely watched races of the evening.

Earlier in the year, Penn attended the Golden Globe Awards where he was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor. However, that honor went to Stellan Skarsgard.

Continued Influence in the Film Industry

Penn’s latest Academy Award win further reinforces his enduring presence in the film industry. With a career spanning more than four decades, the actor has remained a prominent figure in both acting and filmmaking.

While his absence from the ceremony stood out during the event, the recognition itself highlighted the lasting impact of his work and the continued appreciation for his performances among film professionals.
