ElectionStrategy – BJP Moves Closer to Sealing Assam Alliance Deal
ElectionStrategy – The political landscape in Assam is witnessing fresh activity as the Bharatiya Janata Party advances talks to formalize alliances with key regional players before the upcoming Assembly elections expected in April.

The ruling party is in the final stages of negotiations with the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, signaling a renewed effort to consolidate its position across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday indicated that discussions over seat-sharing arrangements with the Asom Gana Parishad were progressing positively.
Seat-Sharing Talks With AGP Near Conclusion
According to the Chief Minister, the BJP is aiming for a comprehensive seat-sharing understanding with the Asom Gana Parishad. However, he acknowledged that minor disagreements could arise in certain constituencies. In such cases, he said, the parties might opt for friendly contests rather than allow disputes to derail the broader alliance.
Sarma suggested that a final announcement regarding the BJP-AGP arrangement could come by March 10. He emphasized that wherever consensus is achievable, both parties are committed to cooperating, underlining the strategic importance of unity ahead of the polls.
Alliance With BPF Almost Final
On the question of ties with the Bodoland People’s Front, the Chief Minister stated that the understanding between the two sides was largely settled as of Thursday. The BPF holds significant influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region, which accounts for 15 Assembly constituencies, making it a crucial partner in the electoral arithmetic.
The party currently governs the Bodoland Territorial Council, an autonomous administrative body in the region. Its recent performance in council elections reinforced its position as a dominant force there, further enhancing its bargaining power in alliance negotiations.
Uncertainty Over UPPL’s Role
Notably absent from Sarma’s remarks was any reference to the United People’s Party Liberal. The BJP had previously governed the Bodoland Territorial Council in collaboration with the UPPL between 2020 and 2025. That coalition, however, lost control following council elections in which the BPF secured a decisive mandate, winning 28 out of 40 seats.
Following the setback, the BJP recalibrated its approach and reopened channels with the BPF. In a sign of warming ties, a legislator from the BPF was later inducted into the state ministry. Given the long-standing rivalry between the BPF and the UPPL, it remains uncertain whether the BJP will attempt to maintain ties with both parties simultaneously. Political observers note that any decision on this front could influence dynamics in the Bodoland region.
Outreach Campaign to Cover Key Constituencies
As alliance discussions move forward, the BJP is also preparing to launch a statewide outreach initiative titled the “Jan Ashirwad Yatra.” The campaign is scheduled to begin on Saturday from the Gupteshwar temple in the Dhekiajuli constituency.
Party leaders have outlined plans to travel across 40 to 50 Assembly segments during the yatra. The objective, according to a party statement, is to highlight development projects and welfare programs implemented by both the central and state governments. Leaders will also seek public support as the election season approaches.
The initiative comes shortly after the Congress party concluded its own outreach drive last month. The Congress campaign, conducted under the banner “Raijor Podulit Raijor Congress,” focused on door-to-door engagement across various constituencies.
With weeks remaining before the expected poll schedule is announced, alliance configurations and campaign strategies are likely to shape the contours of the electoral contest in Assam. As negotiations near completion, attention will remain on how seat-sharing agreements are finalized and how regional equations evolve in the run-up to voting.
