Diplomacy – India and Austria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties following high-level discussions between senior officials in New York. The meeting brought together Ambassador P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Arnold Kammel, Austria’s Deputy Minister of Defence, for wide-ranging talks aimed at expanding cooperation across key sectors.
Focus on Peacekeeping, Trade and Technology
According to a statement shared by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in New York, the two leaders engaged in detailed discussions covering peacekeeping operations, economic collaboration, and advancements in technology and innovation. The exchange was described as constructive, with both sides expressing interest in reinforcing not only bilateral engagement but also collaboration within multilateral platforms.
Ambassador Harish also acknowledged the dialogue publicly, highlighting the importance of sustained engagement between the two nations. The conversation reflects a broader effort by both countries to deepen institutional partnerships and enhance coordination at the United Nations and other international forums.
Diplomatic Momentum Continues
The latest interaction follows recent engagements between senior officials from both governments. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, underscoring the importance both nations place on sustained diplomatic outreach.

In January, President Droupadi Murmu formally received credentials from Austria’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Robert Zischg, marking the beginning of his official tenure in New Delhi. The presentation of credentials signaled Vienna’s continued focus on strengthening ties with India.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Zischg described the relationship between the two countries as longstanding and friendly, rooted in strong economic links and people-to-people connections. He expressed his intention to work closely with Indian partners to further advance cooperation during his posting.
The Austrian Embassy also welcomed his appointment, noting that his leadership would contribute to deepening bilateral relations.
Foreign Office Consultations Reinforce Cooperation
The two nations have maintained structured diplomatic engagement through regular Foreign Office Consultations. The eighth round of consultations, held in December, covered a comprehensive range of issues, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Officials reviewed political ties, trade and investment flows, cultural exchanges and cooperation in science and technology. The discussions also addressed coordination in international organizations and multilateral forums, reflecting the shared interest of both countries in shaping global dialogue on key issues.
Both sides agreed to continue regular exchanges and confirmed that the next round of consultations would be held in New Delhi at a mutually agreed date.

In September last year, Vienna launched an initiative aimed at attracting Indian students to its leading technical universities.
