Racism – Delhi University Group Seeks Action After Harassment Claim
Racism – The North East Students’ Society Delhi University (NESSDU) has denounced an alleged case of racial harassment involving three students from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi, urging authorities to take firm and immediate action against those accused.

Alleged Incident During Installation Work
According to a statement issued by NESSDU on Monday, the incident occurred on February 19 at a rented residence in Malviya Nagar where the students live. An air conditioner was being installed at the time when dust from the work reportedly fell into the apartment below. Although the electrician involved is said to have apologised for the inconvenience, the matter did not end there.
The students alleged that what began as a complaint over the dust soon escalated into verbal abuse and intimidation. They claimed they were subjected to offensive remarks that targeted their ethnic background, leaving them distressed and shaken.
Video Footage Circulates Online
A video that has since circulated widely on social media appears to capture parts of the confrontation. In the footage, individuals can allegedly be heard making disparaging comments directed at the students. Some of the remarks reportedly included racial slurs and stereotypes frequently aimed at people from the Northeast region of India.
Among the statements referenced in the complaint were insinuations questioning the character of the women and suggesting that they were operating a massage parlour. Student representatives described such comments as harmful stereotypes that unfairly target women from the region and reinforce prejudice.
NESSDU stated that incidents of this nature contribute to an atmosphere of insecurity for students from the Northeast studying in the national capital. The organisation emphasised that universities must remain safe and inclusive spaces for individuals from all backgrounds.
Police Register Case Under Relevant Sections
The Delhi Police confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the matter. Officials said the case has been filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to outraging the modesty of a woman and promoting enmity on the basis of religion, race, or other identities.
Two individuals have been named in the complaint, and authorities have begun an investigation. Police officials indicated that appropriate legal action would follow based on the findings of the inquiry.
Students’ Body Demands Accountability
In its statement, NESSDU called for swift and strict measures to ensure accountability. The organisation stressed that racial discrimination and harassment should not be tolerated in any form, particularly in a diverse city such as Delhi that hosts students from across the country.
The students’ body also appealed to university authorities and law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and dignity of students from marginalised communities. It underlined the importance of addressing such incidents promptly to prevent recurrence.
While the investigation is ongoing, the episode has once again drawn attention to concerns about discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in metropolitan areas. Advocacy groups have previously highlighted the need for greater awareness, sensitivity, and stronger enforcement of laws designed to protect individuals from racial abuse.
Authorities have not yet issued further details regarding arrests or additional action. The police investigation is expected to determine the sequence of events and establish responsibility based on evidence and witness accounts.
The case has sparked conversations among students and civil society groups about the need for respectful community relations and strict adherence to anti-discrimination laws. As the inquiry proceeds, student representatives say they will continue to monitor developments and press for justice.
