Fire – Early Morning Blaze Destroys 19 Huts in Hadapsar Settlement

Fire – A powerful fire tore through a cluster of makeshift homes near Ram Manohar Lohiya Garden in Hadapsar in the early hours of Saturday, leaving nineteen families without shelter. The blaze erupted around 2:30 am in a settlement primarily inhabited by daily wage workers, according to officials from the Pune Fire Brigade.

Hadapsar fire destroys 19 huts

Fire Breaks Out Before Dawn

Residents were jolted awake when flames began spreading rapidly across the tightly packed huts constructed from bamboo frames and tin sheets. Within minutes, the fire intensified, illuminating the surrounding area and creating panic among families living in the settlement. Authorities were alerted immediately after locals noticed the growing flames.

Fire brigade teams responded swiftly, dispatching five fire engines to the scene. Given the narrow lanes and closely built structures, firefighters faced challenges in accessing certain sections of the settlement. Despite these difficulties, crews worked methodically to prevent the blaze from reaching adjacent areas.

Two-Hour Operation to Contain Flames

Fire personnel battled the inferno for nearly two hours before bringing it under control. Their primary focus was to stop the fire from spreading beyond the affected cluster, as the surrounding huts were located in close proximity to each other.

Officials confirmed that although no casualties were reported, all nineteen huts suffered extensive damage. Residents managed to escape in time after spotting the flames, but most were unable to retrieve their belongings. Everyday essentials, clothing, utensils, and important documents were destroyed as the structures collapsed under the intense heat.

The swift evacuation is believed to have prevented injuries, as families rushed out of their homes with little more than the clothes they were wearing.

Vehicles Suspected as Possible Source

Fire officer Pramod Sonawane stated that in addition to the huts, three two-wheelers parked near the dwellings were completely gutted. Preliminary information gathered from local residents suggests that the fire may have originated in one of the parked vehicles before spreading to nearby homes.

Some residents have alleged that the two-wheelers might have been deliberately set on fire by unidentified individuals, though this claim has not been officially confirmed. Authorities have not ruled out any possibility and are examining all angles as part of the investigation.

Police personnel also arrived at the location soon after the incident to maintain order and assist with crowd management. Officers ensured that emergency vehicles could access the area without obstruction and helped coordinate relief efforts for affected families.

Investigation Underway

Officials have launched a formal inquiry to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Forensic assessment and statements from residents are expected to guide investigators in establishing whether the fire was accidental or the result of deliberate action.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of densely populated informal settlements, where closely built structures and limited fire safety measures can allow flames to spread quickly. Authorities are expected to review safety conditions in the area as part of their follow-up response.

For now, the affected families face the immediate challenge of rebuilding their lives after losing their homes and possessions overnight. Local authorities are assessing the damage and considering support measures for those displaced.
