HumanRights – NHRC Seeks Report on Journalist Assault at DU Campus
HumanRights – The National Human Rights Commission on Monday sought detailed reports from the Deputy Commissioner of Police for North Delhi and the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University following allegations that a female journalist was attacked during a protest at the university’s North Campus.

The Commission’s intervention comes after a complaint claimed that the reporter, who also works as a digital content creator, was assaulted by a group of individuals while covering developments at the campus.
Allegations of Assault During Campus Protest
According to the complaint submitted to the Commission, the journalist was allegedly surrounded by a crowd and subjected to physical violence. It was further alleged that she was verbally abused and targeted because of her caste identity. The complaint states that the group not only assaulted her but also issued threats of further harm.
The incident reportedly took place amid heightened tensions during a demonstration at Delhi University’s North Campus. The journalist was present in a professional capacity to document the protest when the alleged assault occurred.
Authorities have not yet released a detailed public statement outlining the sequence of events, but the matter has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the accusations.
NHRC Takes Cognisance of Complaint
After reviewing the complaint, the National Human Rights Commission said there appeared to be grounds for concern. In its initial observation, the Commission noted that, on the face of it, the allegations suggested a possible violation of the woman’s fundamental rights.
Acting on this assessment, the Commission directed its Registry to issue formal notices to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Delhi, and to the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University. Both officials have been asked to submit a factual report outlining the circumstances surrounding the incident and any action taken so far.
The Commission’s notice signals that the matter will be examined from a human rights perspective, particularly given the allegations of caste-based targeting and physical assault.
Police and University Response Awaited
Officials from the North Delhi Police are expected to provide details on whether a case has been registered and what steps have been initiated to identify those allegedly involved. It remains unclear whether any arrests have been made at this stage.
Delhi University authorities have also been asked to clarify the situation on campus during the protest and to explain any measures taken to ensure the safety of individuals present, including members of the media.
Campus protests are not uncommon at the university, which has a long history of student activism. However, incidents involving alleged violence against journalists often prompt closer scrutiny due to concerns about press freedom and safety.
Focus on Media Safety and Accountability
The case has once again raised questions about the safety of journalists covering demonstrations and politically sensitive events. Media professionals frequently work in dynamic and sometimes volatile environments, where crowd control and law enforcement coordination play a crucial role in preventing escalation.
The Commission’s involvement underscores the broader responsibility of authorities and educational institutions to safeguard individuals’ rights, regardless of the circumstances. By seeking official reports, the NHRC aims to establish an accurate account of the incident and determine whether any lapses occurred.
Further developments are expected once the police and university submit their responses. The Commission will review the reports before deciding on any additional recommendations or directions.
For now, the focus remains on clarifying the facts and ensuring that due process is followed in addressing the serious allegations raised in the complaint.
