Politics – Mamata Banerjee Defends Leadership Amid TMC Internal Turmoil and Resignations
Politics – Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has firmly responded to criticism surrounding the party’s recent internal unrest, saying that personal attacks over her age would not weaken her determination to continue serving the people. Addressing supporters through a video message on Wednesday, the former West Bengal Chief Minister said she remained committed to protecting the interests of ordinary citizens despite the political challenges facing her party.

Banerjee Responds to Personal Criticism
During her address, Banerjee urged political opponents and the public to avoid making remarks based on age. Referring to events following the recent election results, she alleged that some supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had publicly expressed hopes that she would suffer a fatal heart attack. Rejecting such comments, she declared that she would continue her political journey and remain active in public life.
She also reiterated that her focus would stay on representing common people and party workers. According to Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress continues to attract new supporters despite the recent setbacks, and she expressed confidence that the party’s grassroots strength remains intact.
Confidence Despite Electoral Setback
The TMC has been dealing with internal dissent and resignations after its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Even so, Banerjee projected confidence about the party’s future. She recalled rebuilding the organisation after previous political setbacks and said she was prepared to do the same once again.
Speaking about the party’s parliamentary representation, she noted that the TMC currently has 18 Members of Parliament. She also claimed that some party representatives and their families were facing pressure and intimidation. While acknowledging that some leaders might choose to leave, Banerjee said the party had overcome difficult phases before and was capable of rebuilding its organisational strength.
Questions Raised Over Election Outcome
In her remarks, Banerjee also questioned the circumstances surrounding the Assembly election results. She alleged that the party had not lost under normal conditions and claimed that evidence supporting her position would emerge in the future. However, she did not present any specific proof while making the statement.
Her comments add to the political debate that has continued since the election outcome, with the ruling and opposition parties exchanging allegations over the conduct of the electoral process.
Allegations Against Police and Political Pressure
Banerjee further accused sections of the police administration of acting in favour of the BJP instead of maintaining political neutrality. While stating that she respected the police force as an institution, she alleged that party leaders were being pressured to change political allegiance. According to her, those refusing to join rival political camps were allegedly facing legal action and other forms of pressure.
These allegations have become part of the broader political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP, with both parties continuing to level accusations against each other over governance and political conduct.
Stand on Political Principles
The TMC chief also defended her political approach, saying she had never compromised her principles for political convenience. She maintained that making compromises could have prevented some of the current difficulties but insisted that she would not abandon her values to gain political advantage.
Madan Mitra’s Exit Adds to Party Challenges
Banerjee’s statement comes shortly after senior party leader and Kamarhati MLA Madan Mitra announced his resignation from the Trinamool Congress. The former West Bengal minister said he was finding it difficult to function effectively within the organisation and expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s internal priorities.
Mitra alleged that greater attention was being given to promoting TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee instead of strengthening the party’s organisational structure. He also claimed that concerns he had raised repeatedly before the leadership did not receive an adequate response, adding another layer to the internal challenges currently confronting the party.
