Speaking to reporters, Trump framed the idea as a symbol of national strength, calling the United States the most powerful country in the world and arguing that its capital should reflect that status.
The President shared his latest comments while traveling aboard Air Force One on Sunday, returning to a proposal that has surfaced several times during his presidency and again during his second term in office.
A Vision Rooted in History
Trump told reporters that the idea of a triumphal arch in Washington is not new, noting that discussions around such a structure have existed for nearly two centuries. He said that despite this long history of interest, the project has never been realized. In his view, the absence of a triumphal arch places Washington behind other major global cities that already feature similar monuments.
According to Trump, dozens of cities worldwide have built triumphal arches to commemorate national identity or historic milestones. He emphasized that Washington, which he described as the only major global capital without one, should no longer be an exception.
Construction Timeline and Public Appeal
The President’s latest remarks follow an announcement made earlier this year indicating that preparatory work on the arch could begin soon. In a recent interview, Trump said construction has not yet started but is expected to move forward within the next couple of months.
He expressed confidence that the project would be well received, stating that public response to recent White House renovations has been positive. Trump suggested that, like other high-profile additions, the proposed arch would become a popular feature of the city’s landscape.
Proposed Location Near National Landmarks
Plans for the triumphal arch were first outlined in more detail last October. Trump indicated that several design options are under review, including three different size variations. While he said any of the designs could work depending on their final appearance, he made clear that he favors the largest version.
He described the monument as visually striking and said he believes a large-scale structure would best match the ambition behind the project. The proposed design has drawn comparisons to well-known triumphal arches abroad, particularly those in Europe.
Part of Broader Capital Renovations
The triumphal arch proposal is part of a wider set of renovation and construction efforts underway across Washington during Trump’s second administration. The White House itself is currently undergoing a series of upgrades, including the addition of a new ballroom and modifications to outdoor and interior spaces such as the Rose Garden and the Palm Room.
Beyond the White House, changes have also taken place at the Kennedy Center. Trump oversaw a reshuffling of board members, followed by a vote to rename the institution to include his name alongside that of President John F. Kennedy.

In late 2025, Trump hinted at further updates to the performing arts center, sharing images of proposed marble armrests that could be installed as part of ongoing improvements. In a social media post, he described the designs as unlike anything previously seen at the venue.
