Maharashtra: Sharad Pawar Clarifies NCP Merger Talks After Ajit Pawar Tragedy
Maharashtra: In the wake of dramatic political developments in Maharashtra following the sudden death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an air crash, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar on Saturday addressed speculation surrounding recent leadership changes and ongoing party reunification talks. Speaking to reporters, the veteran leader made it clear that he had not been consulted about the elevation of Sunetra Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister and that crucial merger discussions between the two NCP factions have now been disrupted by the tragedy.

No Consultation on Sunetra Pawar’s Elevation
Sharad Pawar said he was unaware of any internal deliberations regarding Sunetra Pawar’s appointment until it appeared in the media. According to him, there had been no personal or political discussion with her on the matter prior to the swearing-in ceremony.
“I came to know about the ceremony through the morning news,” he told journalists, distancing himself from the decision-making process and underlining that he played no role in the development.
Merger Talks Were Near Completion
Addressing the long-running split within the NCP, Sharad Pawar confirmed that efforts to reunite the two factions had reached an advanced stage. He noted that constructive discussions had taken place between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil, and that a formal announcement on reunification was expected on February 12.
He described the talks as positive and said there was broad agreement on bringing the party back together after months of negotiations aimed at restoring unity.
Sharad Pawar Not Directly Involved
While acknowledging progress in the talks, Sharad Pawar clarified that he was not personally engaged in the negotiations. He said the dialogue was primarily led by Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil, with the shared understanding that reunification was in the party’s best interest.
“It was Ajit Dada’s initiative that both sides of the NCP should reunite, and that sentiment was shared,” he explained, emphasizing that the process was driven by leaders from within the factions themselves.
Tragedy Disrupts Political Road Map
The unexpected death of Ajit Pawar has now placed the future of the merger in uncertainty. Sharad Pawar acknowledged that the loss of the leader who spearheaded the talks has created a serious challenge for both sides.
“For nearly four months, a clear road map was being discussed,” he said. “With the person who initiated and guided those talks no longer with us, the process inevitably faces a setback.”
He added that the next steps would depend on how leaders from both factions choose to move forward in the changed circumstances.
Party Decisions Belong to the Faction
Responding to questions about the possible induction of Sunetra Pawar or Rohit Pawar into the ministry, Sharad Pawar said he had no information on the matter. He noted that calls for Sunetra Pawar’s leadership were emerging from within her own group.
He further stated that decisions regarding leadership and appointments rest with the faction currently in power, naming senior leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare as those authorized to take such calls.
“Our political paths are different,” he said. “While the family stands united in grief, politics is separate.”
Remembering Ajit Pawar’s Legacy
Reflecting on his nephew’s career, Sharad Pawar paid tribute to Ajit Pawar’s work ethic and connection with the public. He described him as a leader deeply engaged with grassroots issues and committed to addressing people’s concerns through constant dialogue.
“His day would begin at dawn,” Sharad Pawar recalled. “If he were here today, he would not be resting at home but working among the people.”
He described the loss as a profound blow not only to the Pawar family but also to the state of Maharashtra, noting that Ajit Pawar’s absence leaves a significant void in the political landscape.
