Democracy as India’s Enduring Legacy

In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted that India is widely known as the world’s largest democracy, but it also proudly carries the identity of being the Mother of Democracy. He underlined that democratic traditions in the country are deeply rooted in its civilisation, where debate, dialogue, and public participation have existed for centuries. According to him, democracy in India is not just a modern political system but a cultural inheritance passed down through generations.

Milestone of 75 Years of General Elections

The Prime Minister drew attention to a historic milestone, noting that the country is marking 75 years since the first General Election held between 1951 and 1952. He described those elections as a powerful example of the democratic spirit of the Indian people, conducted at a time when the nation was newly independent and still overcoming significant challenges. This legacy, he said, continues to inspire confidence in the strength of Indian democracy.

Voting as a Sacred Responsibility

Emphasising the importance of voting, the Prime Minister referred to voters as the true architects of the nation’s development journey. He explained that casting a vote is a sacred act that represents active participation in shaping the future of the country. The indelible ink mark on a voter’s finger, he said, symbolises honour, responsibility, and commitment to keeping democracy vibrant and purposeful.

Importance of First-Time Voters

Special attention was given to first-time voters, whom the Prime Minister described as holding the power to transform the destiny of the nation. He encouraged families, communities, and institutions to celebrate when young people vote for the first time. According to him, National Voters’ Day on January 25 serves as an ideal occasion to welcome new voters into the democratic process and make them feel valued and empowered.

Role of Educational Institutions

The Prime Minister stressed that schools and colleges play a crucial role in nurturing democratic values. He encouraged educational institutions to organise ceremonies or initiatives that recognise students who reach voting age. Such efforts, he said, can make young voters feel special and responsible as they step into this new civic duty. Campuses can also act as centres for voter enrollment drives to ensure every eligible youth is registered.

Elections as a Festival of Democracy

Highlighting the scale of Indian elections, the Prime Minister noted that while the world often views them as a logistical achievement, for Indians they are much more. Elections, he said, are a festival of democracy where citizens from diverse regions come together to make their voices heard. From remote Himalayan villages to islands, deserts, and forests, voters participate with remarkable dedication.

Contribution of Women and Youth

The Prime Minister praised the growing participation of women, especially young women, calling their involvement essential for an inclusive democracy. He stated that their awareness and engagement have strengthened democratic foundations. He also lauded the youth associated with the MY Bharat platform, describing them as a generation driven by a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.

Call for a Stronger Democratic Future

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister urged young citizens to spread awareness about the importance of becoming a voter and to actively contribute to strengthening democracy. He called for collective efforts to build a developed, inclusive, and self-reliant nation, reaffirming his greetings on National Voters’ Day and his faith in the power of India’s youth.
