Rajasthan: After a violent protest against an ethanol plant in Hanumangarh, more than ten people were hurt; the internet was shut down and schools were closed

Rajasthan: When agitators tried to tear down the wall that was still being built, the demonstration against the development of an ethanol plant in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, descended into violence. At least a dozen persons, including five police officers and a Congress MLA, were hurt when the police used a lathi charge.

Seven agitators have been arrested by the police. The demonstrators burned administrative cars and police officers. Tear gas shells were fired by the police in response to the stones they threw at them.

Hanumangarh SP “A mahapanchayat was held against the ethanol plant,” Hari Shankar said. The factory was vandalized by several individuals who marched towards it. Five cops were hurt in the altercation. The cops are taking action. Seven individuals have been placed under arrest.

In Rathi Kheda hamlet, development has started on an ethanol factory that would cost around Rs 450 crore. The project is being protested by farmers who say it would pollute the region.

After being hurt in the altercation between police and farmers, Congress MLA Abhimanyu Punia was brought to the Hanumangarh District Hospital.

The government has blocked internet access in Tibbi and the adjacent districts as a precaution. Additionally, stores and schools have been told to shut till further notice. There are prohibitions in place in the region. There is a large police presence on the location.
