WageHike – Police Crack Down After Violent Noida Labour Protest
WageHike – The Uttar Pradesh Police have taken further action following last week’s violent labour unrest in Noida, arresting two individuals suspected of playing a key role in escalating the situation.

Authorities identified the accused as Himanshu Thakur and Satyam Verma, both allegedly linked to activities that intensified tensions during the workers’ protest. Officials stated that a formal case has been registered at the Phase 2 police station, and the investigation continues to expand as more details emerge.
Arrests Linked to Organised Activity
According to police officials, both individuals are associated with a workers’ group known as Mazdoor Bigul Dasta. Investigators believe the duo actively contributed to provoking unrest during the demonstration.
Police sources indicated that Himanshu Thakur was present in Noida on the day of the incident and maintained regular communication with Aditya Anand, who is suspected to be the central figure behind the planning of the events. Authorities are examining digital and communication records to establish the extent of coordination.
Violence Described as Pre-Planned
Senior police officials have suggested that the violence witnessed on April 13 was not an isolated or spontaneous outburst. Instead, it is being treated as a coordinated effort involving multiple individuals.
The protest, initially centred on demands for higher minimum wages, escalated after a confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel. The situation quickly deteriorated, with reports of stone-pelting and vehicles being set ablaze in different parts of the area.
Investigators now believe that certain elements within the protest may have prepared in advance for disruptive actions, leading to a more organised pattern of violence.
Large-Scale Detentions and Ongoing Probe
In the days following the incident, police have intensified their operations. More than 350 individuals have reportedly been detained for questioning, while over 200 have been formally arrested so far.
Officials noted that several of those taken into custody are accused of participating in acts of arson and property damage. Authorities described these actions as systematic, suggesting a level of planning that is now a central focus of the investigation.
Law enforcement agencies continue to review evidence, including video footage and eyewitness accounts, to identify additional suspects and determine the full scope of involvement.
Government Announces Wage Increase
Amid the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government has moved to address the workers’ core demand. A 21 percent increase in minimum wages for workers in Noida and Ghaziabad has been approved, with effect from April 1, 2026.
Under the revised structure, unskilled workers will now receive a monthly wage of ₹13,690, up from ₹11,313. Skilled workers will see their salaries increase to ₹16,868, marking a significant adjustment aimed at easing tensions.
Committee Formed for Long-Term Solutions
The wage revision follows recommendations from a high-level committee established under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The panel includes representatives from both labour groups and industry stakeholders.
Its mandate extends beyond the immediate wage hike. The committee has been tasked with developing a sustainable framework for future wage revisions while ensuring stability in industrial relations across the region.
Officials expressed hope that these measures would help restore normalcy and prevent further disruptions. Meanwhile, police continue their efforts to bring all those responsible for last week’s violence to account.
