SewerSafety – Noida Worker Dies During Sewer Tank Cleaning Operation

SewerSafety –A sanitation worker lost his life during a sewer cleaning operation in Noida, triggering official action, a departmental inquiry, and allegations of negligence from the victim’s family.

Noida sewer worker cleaning death

A sanitation worker died while cleaning a sewer tank in Noida’s Sector 93B on Tuesday evening, raising fresh concerns over worker safety during hazardous maintenance operations. The incident occurred in the Gejha area, where the worker reportedly entered a sewer line as part of a cleaning assignment. He was rushed to a nearby district hospital at around 8:55 pm, but doctors declared him dead after examination.

Victim Declared Dead at District Hospital

The deceased was identified as Shiva, a resident of Sector 93. According to Emergency Medical Officer Dr. Sanchit Sharma, the police and Shiva’s family brought him to the hospital after receiving information that he had drowned inside the sewer line. Medical staff found no signs of life during the examination. Hospital officials confirmed that his vital parameters were absent, the ECG showed no cardiac activity, and there was no pupil reflex, indicating that he had died before reaching the hospital.

Noida Authority Announces Departmental Action

Following the incident, the Noida Authority issued an official statement outlining the immediate administrative measures taken. According to the authority, the worker had been provided with the required safety equipment before the cleaning work began. The statement added that he was pulled out of the sewer and taken to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead during treatment.

The authority also announced disciplinary action against officials linked to the incident. The services of contractual Junior Engineer Rakesh Kumar were terminated with immediate effect, while a show-cause notice was issued to the concerned Senior Manager. Officials further stated that all assistance permitted under existing rules would be extended to the deceased worker’s family without delay.

Family Alleges Serious Negligence

Shiva’s family strongly disputed the official version of events and accused civic authorities of failing to ensure proper safety measures. His brother alleged that officials of the Noida Authority were responsible for Shiva’s death and claimed that the tragedy could have been prevented with timely intervention.

According to him, the civic body possesses advanced sewer cleaning machinery, but the equipment was allegedly left unused instead of being deployed for hazardous operations. He maintained that workers were still being required to enter sewer lines manually despite the availability of mechanical alternatives.

Claims of Delay in Rescue Operation

The victim’s brother further alleged that Shiva remained trapped inside the sewer for nearly four hours before he was finally recovered. He claimed that no senior official arrived promptly to coordinate rescue efforts and alleged that one individual who briefly appeared at the site left without offering assistance.

He said police personnel and members of the fire services eventually helped retrieve Shiva from the sewer. The family also claimed that adequate machinery for emergency rescue was not available at the site when it was needed most.

Demand for Accountability Continues

The grieving family has demanded strict action against those responsible and insisted that accountability should extend beyond departmental proceedings. Shiva’s brother alleged corruption within the civic administration and accused officials of repeatedly avoiding responsibility after such incidents.

He said the family would continue seeking justice and would not end its protest until appropriate action was taken against those they believe were responsible for the fatal incident. Authorities are expected to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the sewer cleaning operation as part of the ongoing inquiry.
