PowerCrisis – Rising complaints over electricity shortages in Uttar Pradesh triggered sharp political reactions on Friday, with major opposition parties accusing the state government of failing to improve power infrastructure despite growing demand during the intense summer season. Leaders from the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party urged the administration to take immediate corrective measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.

Akhilesh Yadav Questions State’s Power Expansion Efforts

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government for what he described as inadequate planning in the energy sector. Referring to the rising pressure on electricity distribution during peak summer months, Yadav said the government had failed to establish new power generation projects capable of meeting public demand.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, he remarked that the administration neither showed the vision nor the ability to introduce large-scale thermal power facilities in the state. He suggested that even discussing advanced power projects could have offered reassurance to residents struggling with prolonged heat and irregular electricity supply.

The SP leader further alleged that electricity charges and consumer demand had continued to rise while the availability of power remained inconsistent in many districts. According to him, the present situation reflected deeper shortcomings in governance and long-term infrastructure planning.

Mayawati Highlights Public Hardship During Heatwave

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati also expressed concern over the worsening power situation, especially as temperatures continue to climb across northern India. She said complaints related to power cuts and reduced electricity supply were increasing rapidly in Uttar Pradesh, one of the country’s most densely populated states.

In her remarks posted online, Mayawati stated that repeated outages had created serious inconvenience for ordinary citizens. She noted that economically weaker families, middle-class households, farmers, shopkeepers and daily wage earners were among the worst affected by the unstable supply conditions.

The BSP leader said growing public frustration was becoming visible through protests, local reactions and continuous media coverage of the issue. She urged the state government to respond quickly and introduce practical measures that could reduce the difficulties being faced by residents during the extreme summer weather.

Demand for New Power Infrastructure Gains Attention

Both opposition leaders emphasised the need for stronger investment in power generation and distribution systems. They argued that expanding electricity infrastructure would not only improve daily life for residents but also support economic activity in both urban and rural areas.

Mayawati specifically called for the establishment of additional power plants and related infrastructure projects to address recurring shortages. She said such steps were necessary to protect public welfare and maintain stable services during periods of high consumption.

The criticism comes at a time when several parts of Uttar Pradesh are witnessing increased electricity usage due to soaring temperatures and higher dependence on cooling appliances. Energy demand traditionally rises sharply during summer months, placing additional pressure on distribution networks across the state.

Electricity availability continues to remain a politically sensitive issue in Uttar Pradesh, where uninterrupted supply is closely linked to agriculture, business operations and household needs. Frequent outages during heatwaves often draw strong public reactions, especially in smaller towns and rural regions where infrastructure challenges persist.

While opposition parties have intensified their criticism, attention is now likely to remain focused on how the state government addresses concerns related to power generation capacity, distribution efficiency and consumer complaints in the coming weeks.
