Grand Rituals Held at Varanasi Ghats

Varanasi witnessed elaborate celebrations at Devi Ahilyabai Ghat, where religious ceremonies were organised with large public participation. Devotees gathered in huge numbers to take a holy dip in the Ganga, which is considered highly auspicious on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra. Priests performed Vedic chants while conch shells echoed across the ghats during the rituals dedicated to Maa Ganga.

Special worship ceremonies also took place at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham. According to the temple administration, the celebrations began early in the morning with aarti and ceremonial offerings to the river goddess. The idol of Maa Ganga located inside the temple premises was worshipped with traditional rituals and sacred hymns.

Religious Leaders Highlight Cultural Significance

Religious organisers stated that the event was conducted on a large scale under the supervision of local spiritual leaders and community representatives. Programme coordinator Dr Pawan Shukla said that 51 young priests participated in the milk abhishek ceremony using 21 litres of milk as part of the traditional worship process. The rituals also included Shodashopachar puja and Ganga Aarti conducted under the guidance of Acharya Udit Narayan Mishra.

Visitors continued arriving at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple throughout the day to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Maa Ganga. Many devotees described the festival as an occasion for spiritual cleansing and inner peace. According to long-standing religious beliefs, taking a dip in the river on Ganga Dussehra is associated with purification and liberation from past sins.

Focus on Ganga Conservation Efforts

During the celebrations, BJP MLA Neelkanth Tiwari spoke about efforts undertaken for the conservation and rejuvenation of the River Ganga. Referring to initiatives introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said the Namami Gange programme was launched with the aim of improving the cleanliness and ecological condition of the river.

He added that Prime Minister Modi has often expressed a deep spiritual connection with Maa Ganga and considers the river an important part of India’s cultural and religious identity. According to him, various government-led projects continue to focus on restoring the river’s natural purity and maintaining the sanctity of the ghats.

Large Gatherings Seen in Prayagraj

In Prayagraj, thousands of worshippers visited the famous Hanuman Temple during the fourth Bada Mangal observed in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. The temple premises remained crowded throughout the day as devotees offered prayers to Lord Hanuman while also observing the Ganga Dussehra festival.

Many pilgrims shared the belief that Ganga Dussehra commemorates the descent of the River Ganga to Earth through the efforts of King Bhagirath. Devotees said the festival carries immense spiritual value and is observed with devotion across northern India every year.

Mahant Balveer Giri Maharaj of Prayagraj stated that the ongoing religious period holds special importance for devotees. He said prayers offered to Lord Hanuman during this time are believed to bring strength and relief, especially during the intense summer heat associated with the Nau Tapa period.

Spiritual Traditions Continue Across the State

Across Uttar Pradesh, temples and ghats remained filled with devotees participating in religious activities throughout the day. From ritual bathing and aarti ceremonies to devotional singing and temple visits, the celebrations reflected the enduring cultural importance of the River Ganga in Indian spiritual traditions.

Religious leaders and local authorities also ensured arrangements for crowd management and smooth conduct of ceremonies as thousands gathered to mark the annual festival with faith and devotion.
