Corruption – Ram Mandir Donation Probe Sparks Fresh Political Debate Over Transparency

Corruption – Allegations surrounding the handling of donations at the Ram Mandir have intensified political scrutiny, with fresh demands for a transparent and impartial investigation.

Ram mandir donation probe political debate

CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby has questioned the credibility of the ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of donations collected at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Raising concerns over the fairness of the probe, he said there is growing public apprehension that influential individuals connected to the matter could escape accountability if the investigation is not carried out independently.

CPI(M) Questions Fairness of Investigation

Speaking on the controversy, M.A. Baby contrasted earlier claims made by the RSS and BJP regarding clean governance with the current allegations linked to the temple donation case. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-standing anti-corruption slogan and said the developments surrounding the Ayodhya temple have raised serious questions about transparency.

According to him, the complete extent of the alleged financial irregularities has yet to be determined. However, he argued that the accusations involving individuals associated with the temple project require a comprehensive and unbiased inquiry rather than a limited investigation.

Call for Independent and Transparent Action

The CPI(M) leader urged the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that every individual found responsible is brought before the law through a fair judicial process. He also questioned whether the administration led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would permit a thorough Special Investigation Team inquiry without political interference.

Expressing concern over possible attempts to shield influential figures, Baby stressed that public institutions must remain vigilant and uphold accountability regardless of political affiliations.

Kejriwal Joins Political Criticism

The controversy has also drawn a strong response from Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. During his visit to Ayodhya, Kejriwal criticised the Uttar Pradesh government and demanded the harshest legal punishment for those found guilty of embezzling devotees’ donations.

His remarks came shortly after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath criticised the previous AAP government in Delhi over alleged corruption, adding another layer to the ongoing political exchange between the two parties.

Resignations and Court Proceedings Deepen Controversy

The alleged multi-lakh donation scam has intensified after two senior members of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust stepped down, accepting what they described as moral responsibility amid the controversy. Their resignations followed the registration of an FIR on June 25 under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning the alleged misuse of temple funds.

In another major development, a special court in Ayodhya sent eight accused individuals, including public servants and employees of the State Bank of India, to judicial custody until June 29. Investigating agencies have reported recovering nearly Rs 79.85 lakh during the course of the investigation.

Political Reactions Continue as Probe Advances

Opposition parties have described the alleged embezzlement as a breach of the trust placed by millions of devotees and have demanded accountability at the highest level. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has maintained that legal procedures are being followed impartially and has accused its political opponents of attempting to exploit the issue for electoral gains.

According to prosecution officials, nearly the entire amount allegedly linked to the case has been recovered from the accused, with one exception. Investigators claim the complaint points to an organised conspiracy involving individuals responsible for counting and managing temple offerings.

As the Special Investigation Team continues its work, the case is expected to remain under close public and political scrutiny. The outcome of the investigation will likely influence broader discussions on transparency, financial oversight, and public confidence in the administration of one of India’s most prominent religious institutions.
