WorldCup – New Zealand Names Squad for 2026 Women’s T20 Title Defense

WorldCup – New Zealand has unveiled its 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, with a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent set to represent the defending champions.

The team, captained by Melie Kerr, includes ten players who were part of the title-winning campaign in 2024. Among them are seasoned cricketers Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates, both preparing for their tenth and final appearance in the tournament. Their inclusion adds depth and experience to a squad aiming to retain the trophy on English soil.

Senior Players Set for Final International Appearance

A significant aspect of the squad announcement is the confirmation that Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu will retire from T20 internationals after the tournament. This follows their earlier decision to step away from One Day Internationals during the previous season. Meanwhile, Suzie Bates has also confirmed that she will bring her international career to a close at the end of the World Cup, marking the end of an era for New Zealand cricket.

Head coach Ben Sawyer acknowledged the contribution of the trio, noting that their experience and leadership have played a crucial role in shaping the team over the years. He emphasized that the players are focused on finishing their careers on a strong note rather than dwelling on retirement.

New Faces Earn First World Cup Opportunities

The squad also introduces fresh talent, with Nensi Patel and Izzy Sharp receiving their first-ever World Cup call-ups. Patel, an off-spinning all-rounder, has impressed in domestic competitions and made an immediate impact during her international debut against Zimbabwe earlier this year, delivering a standout bowling performance.

Izzy Sharp, at 21, is the youngest member of the squad. She previously captained New Zealand in the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 and has steadily built her reputation as a dependable batter. Since making her senior debut in 2025, Sharp has become a consistent performer in domestic cricket, including leading the run charts for Canterbury in the recent Super Smash season.

Balanced Squad Across Departments

New Zealand’s squad reflects a well-rounded combination of batting strength, spin options, and pace attack. Captain Kerr, who was instrumental in the 2024 triumph with a record 15 wickets, will once again lead the spin unit alongside Bates, Flora Devonshire, and Patel.

The pace department will see participation from players such as Bree Illing, who is set to make her debut in this format at a World Cup, along with Lea Tahuhu and others. Wicketkeeper-batter Polly Inglis also earns her place after consistent performances, adding stability behind the stumps and in the batting order.

Group Stage Challenges Await

New Zealand has been placed in Group 2 of the tournament, where they will face strong competition from England, Ireland, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. These fixtures will determine qualification for the knockout stages, making consistency in the group phase crucial.

The team management believes the combination of experienced leaders and emerging players will provide the right balance needed to navigate a competitive tournament.

Focus on Finishing Strong

Coach Ben Sawyer highlighted that while the upcoming tournament carries emotional significance due to multiple retirements, the team remains focused on performance. He described the moment as rare, with three senior players concluding their careers in the same event, but stressed that their immediate goal is success on the field.

As New Zealand prepares to defend its title, attention will be on how effectively the team integrates new players while relying on its experienced core to guide them through high-pressure situations.
