World Cup Final – Slavko Vinčić Selected to Officiate Argentina and Spain Title Clash

World Cup Final – FIFA has confirmed that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will oversee the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Argentina and Spain will compete for football’s biggest prize at New York New Jersey Stadium on Monday (IST). The appointment places one of Europe’s most experienced match officials in charge of the tournament’s most significant fixture, expected to draw a crowd of more than 80,000 spectators.

FIFA Announces Refereeing Team

The announcement was accompanied by comments from FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, who praised the selection and described the opportunity as a special moment. In a video released by FIFA on X, Collina said it was a remarkable occasion and expressed confidence in Vinčić leading the officiating team for the championship match.

FIFA also revealed the complete list of officials assigned to the final. Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic will serve as the assistant referees, while Adham Makhadmeh has been named fourth official. Mohammad Alkalaf will perform the duties of reserve assistant referee during the contest.

Argentina and Spain Set for Historic Contest

The championship match brings together two nations with distinguished World Cup histories. Spain, champions in 2010, are preparing to appear in only their second World Cup final. Argentina, meanwhile, are aiming to secure a fourth world title after previous triumphs in 1978, 1986, and 2022.

Argentina have also finished as runners-up on three occasions, reaching the finals in 1930, 1990, and 2014. Their experience on football’s biggest stage contrasts with Spain’s more limited appearances in the tournament’s deciding match, adding another layer of intrigue to this highly anticipated encounter.

Previous World Cup Meeting

Although both countries have established themselves among international football’s elite, they have crossed paths only once before in FIFA World Cup history. That meeting came during the 1966 tournament, where Argentina emerged with a narrow 2-1 victory over Spain.

Their latest encounter carries far greater significance, with the World Cup trophy at stake. Supporters from across the globe are expected to watch as the two football powers compete for one of the sport’s highest honors.

Vinčić’s Journey to the World Cup Final

At 46 years of age, Vinčić reaches one of the defining moments of his refereeing career. He first appeared at the FIFA World Cup during the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he officiated two matches. During the ongoing 2026 competition, he has already been assigned three fixtures, bringing his overall World Cup total to six matches.

The final between Argentina and Spain will be his fourth appointment in this edition of the tournament, highlighting FIFA’s confidence in his consistency, decision-making, and ability to manage high-pressure occasions.

Extensive Experience in International Football

Vinčić has built an impressive reputation across European and international competitions over the years. One of the standout moments of his career came when he refereed the 2024 UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious appointments available to European officials.

Beyond that landmark assignment, he has handled matches in the UEFA European Championship, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Nations League, FIFA Club World Cup, and numerous FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures. His experience also includes UEFA youth tournaments and a large number of senior international matches, demonstrating a career built on top-level officiating across multiple competitions.

His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final reflects years of consistent performances and reinforces FIFA’s trust in his ability to manage one of football’s most closely watched events.
