Football- Promotion Battle Ends with Delhi FC and Bengaluru United Celebrating Success
Football- Delhi FC sealed a successful return to the Indian Football League after finishing as champions of the I-League 2 season following a tense 1-1 draw against United SC at Kalyani Stadium. The result confirmed Delhi FC’s place in the 2026-27 Indian Football League campaign, while FC Bengaluru United also secured promotion after drawing 1-1 with GMSC in Mumbai.

Delhi FC Clinch Title After Hard-Fought Contest
United SC entered the decisive fixture with aggressive intent and looked dangerous from the opening stages in front of their home supporters. The attacking quartet of M. Sreenath, M. Arunlal, Sumay Shome, and Md. Amil Naim consistently tested Delhi FC’s defensive setup, while Bickey Thapa and Prasanta Das controlled the pace in midfield.
The first notable opportunity arrived when Amil attempted a long-range strike, but Delhi goalkeeper Lalmuansanga handled the effort comfortably. United SC continued to threaten through quick passing combinations and energetic movement in the attacking third.
Sumay Shome nearly broke the deadlock after a strong midfield run from Prasanta Das created space inside the box, but Lalmuansanga produced another important save to keep the scores level. Despite several attacking moments from both teams, neither side managed to find a breakthrough before halftime.
United SC Take Lead Before Delhi Fight Back
The home side finally found the opening goal shortly after the restart. A corner delivery created confusion inside the box, and Susovan Ghosh responded with a powerful header after previously striking the crossbar moments earlier. His finish gave United SC renewed hope of securing promotion.
Delhi FC, however, responded with composure midway through the second half. Akash Tirkey delivered a precise through ball into the path of Samson Keishing, who unselfishly squared the ball across goal for Himanshu Jangra. The league’s leading scorer calmly tapped the ball into an empty net to restore parity in the 66th minute.
Knowing only victory would guarantee their promotion ambitions, United SC pushed more players forward during the final stages. However, clear opportunities became difficult to create against a disciplined Delhi defence. Ironically, the best late chance fell to Delhi FC when Himanshu Jangra tested the goalkeeper with a strong effort that was pushed away.
The final whistle confirmed Delhi FC as I-League 2 champions and extended United SC’s wait for a return to the second tier of Indian football to 12 years.
Bengaluru United Confirm Promotion in Mumbai
At the Neville D’Souza Ground in Mumbai, FC Bengaluru United secured the crucial point they needed with a 1-1 draw against GMSC. The Bengaluru club finished level on points with United SC but earned promotion because of a superior goal difference.
FC Bengaluru United made a dream start when Lijo scored in the fourth minute. The move began with Lalramdinsanga Ralte releasing Shunjanthan Ragui down the right flank before a perfectly placed cross found Lijo, who directed a smart header into the net.
GMSC gradually recovered after the early setback and began enjoying more possession. Kean Lewis remained their main attacking outlet on the left wing and helped create several promising moves. Their best first-half opening came through Advait Ashok Shinde, whose shot from inside the penalty area lacked the power needed to trouble goalkeeper Manjunath Hirekurbar.
GMSC Avoid Relegation With Valuable Draw
The Mumbai side found their equaliser soon after halftime. Kean Lewis delivered a powerful free-kick that slipped through the hands of the Bengaluru goalkeeper, allowing substitute Shravan Shetty to react quickly and convert from close range.
The remainder of the match turned into a tense battle as both clubs searched for a winning goal. Bengaluru United attempted to dominate possession, while GMSC looked dangerous during counter-attacks.
Late attempts from Dhruv Sharma and Ashley Alban Koli tested the GMSC defence, but goalkeeper Paramjeetshing Baghel remained composed under pressure. At the opposite end, Abdul Hannan produced several crucial defensive interventions to deny GMSC a second goal.
The draw ultimately proved significant for both clubs. FC Bengaluru United celebrated promotion to the Indian Football League, while GMSC successfully avoided relegation after finishing above NEROCA FC due to a better head-to-head record.
