Early Advantage for Braga

The Portuguese side began with intent and found an early breakthrough. Continuing their trend of fast starts at home in knockout matches, Braga opened the scoring within the first ten minutes. Demir Ege Tıknaz reacted quickly inside the box to convert a low delivery from Victor Gomez, giving the hosts an early edge.

This strong opening reflected Braga’s attacking approach, which has seen them frequently strike early in recent European fixtures.

Freiburg Respond Through Grifo

Freiburg, however, showed composure and responded with a well-crafted equaliser. Vincenzo Grifo, leading from the front, finished calmly after being set up by Jan-Niklas Beste, who made an incisive run down the right flank. The goal marked Grifo’s third in four Europa League matches, underlining his importance to the German side.

The equaliser shifted the tempo of the game, with Freiburg gaining confidence and matching Braga’s intensity.

Injury Blow and Missed Opportunity

Braga faced a setback midway through the first half when captain Ricardo Horta was forced off due to injury. His absence disrupted the team’s rhythm, especially given his contribution of four goals in the campaign so far.

Despite the disruption, Braga had a golden opportunity to regain the lead before halftime. Rodrigo Zalazar stepped up for a penalty, but Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu produced an outstanding save, diving full stretch to deny the effort and keep the score level.

Balanced Second Half Battle

The second half unfolded as a closely contested affair, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find the decisive touch. Freiburg came close to taking the lead when Maximilian Eggestein tested Lukáš Hornícek, who responded with a crucial save.

The intensity remained high as both teams looked to gain an advantage before the second leg, but defenses largely held firm for most of the half.

Late Drama Seals Victory

Just when the match appeared destined to end in a draw, Braga found a breakthrough deep into stoppage time. Substitute Mario Dorgeles, who had come on following Horta’s injury, capitalised on a rebound after Atubolu failed to control a shot from Vitor Carvalho. Dorgeles calmly finished from close range in the 92nd minute, securing a vital win for the hosts.

Coach Praises Team Resilience

Braga head coach Carlos Vicens acknowledged the challenges his team faced but praised their determination. He highlighted the early goal, the setback of losing their captain, and the missed penalty as key moments that tested the squad.

According to Vicens, the team demonstrated strong character, belief, and unity to overcome difficulties and secure the late winner. He described the players as a cohesive group that maintained confidence throughout the match.

Looking Ahead to Second Leg

With this result, Braga take a slender advantage into the second leg, but the tie remains finely balanced. Freiburg’s away goal and competitive performance ensure that the contest is far from decided.

Both teams will now prepare for a decisive return match, where consistency, discipline, and finishing could determine who advances to the Europa League final.
