Cricket – England Secure Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-Final Place With Convincing Victory

Cricket –  England became the first side to confirm its place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals after defeating the West Indies by 38 runs in a commanding performance. A composed innings from Danni Wyatt-Hodge laid the foundation for the hosts, while a disciplined bowling display ensured England maintained its unbeaten record with a fourth consecutive victory in the tournament.

Wyatt-Hodge Anchors England’s Competitive Total

After being asked to bat first, England suffered an early setback when Amy Jones was dismissed in the opening over by Chinelle Henry. Despite the early blow, the batting unit responded positively, refusing to let the West Indies bowlers settle into a consistent rhythm.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge played the defining innings of the match, scoring 65 from just 42 deliveries. Her knock featured eight boundaries and provided the momentum England needed through the middle overs. She received valuable support from Alice Capsey, who contributed 28 runs, while Heather Knight added a fluent 43 from only 26 balls. Knight made the most of an early reprieve after being dropped on 14 by Hayley Matthews.

England collected 86 runs during the first half of the innings before accelerating significantly in the closing overs. Although Wyatt-Hodge was run out and the West Indies removed hard-hitting batters Freya Kemp and Danielle Gibson in quick succession, England’s lower order added 24 runs in the final two overs to finish on an imposing 186/7.

West Indies Bowling Struggles Under Pressure

The West Indies bowling attack found it difficult to contain England’s aggressive approach. Apart from Aaliyah Alleyne, who finished without taking a wicket, every bowler conceded more than eight runs per over. Off-spinner Ashmini Munisar emerged as the most successful bowler, claiming two wickets while conceding 42 runs from her allotted four overs.

Despite taking regular wickets, the visitors were unable to prevent England from building partnerships and maintaining a strong scoring rate throughout the innings.

England Bowlers Maintain Complete Control

Set a target of 187, the West Indies required a strong start but lost captain Hayley Matthews early. Linsey Smith removed Matthews after England successfully overturned the on-field not-out decision through the Decision Review System for a caught-behind dismissal.

Deandra Dottin briefly revived the chase by attacking Charlie Dean with two boundaries and a six. However, Dean responded well by dismissing Dottin with a quicker delivery that was caught at long-on, ending a potentially dangerous partnership before it could develop.

Shemaine Campbelle, who had guided the West Indies to victory against New Zealand earlier in the tournament, was unable to repeat that performance. Sophie Ecclestone dismissed her for 20, leaving the visitors struggling at 64/3.

Semi-Final Berth Confirmed After Fourth Straight Win

From that point onward, England’s bowlers maintained tight control with disciplined lines and accurate field placements, preventing the West Indies from gathering the momentum needed for a successful chase. The visitors eventually closed on 148/5, well short of the required target.

England’s balanced performance with both bat and ball highlighted the consistency that has marked its tournament campaign so far. The victory secured a semi-final place and reinforced the team’s status as one of the strongest contenders for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 title.
