Cricket Coaching – Simon Helmot Takes Charge of Gulf Giants for New ILT20 Season
Cricket Coaching – Gulf Giants have appointed experienced Australian coach Simon Helmot as the team’s new head coach ahead of the upcoming edition of the UAE’s International League T20.

Adani Sportsline confirmed the appointment of Simon Helmot, adding another experienced name to the Gulf Giants setup as preparations begin for the next ILT20 campaign. The Australian coach arrives with more than 20 years of involvement in domestic and franchise cricket across several major T20 competitions around the world.
Extensive Experience Across Global T20 Competitions
Helmot has built a strong reputation through coaching roles in leading cricket tournaments in India, Australia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. His long-standing association with the Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League dates back to 2013, where he played a role in shaping multiple successful campaigns over the years.
Apart from the IPL, the veteran strategist has also contributed to title-winning efforts in various franchise leagues, earning recognition for his tactical approach and ability to manage high-pressure situations. His coaching philosophy has often focused on creating disciplined environments while helping players improve performance standards consistently.
Successful Stint With Melbourne Renegades
Before joining Gulf Giants, Helmot completed a five-year spell with the Melbourne Renegades in Australian cricket. One of the major highlights of his tenure came in 2024 when the Renegades secured their maiden Women’s Big Bash League championship under his leadership.
His work with the Australian side strengthened his reputation as a coach capable of rebuilding squads and developing competitive team structures. Cricket administrators and franchise owners have frequently praised his calm leadership style and player-focused management approach.
Discussions on Long-Term Team Vision
As part of the transition into his new role, Helmot recently met Pranav Adani, Director of Adani Enterprises Limited, in Ahmedabad. The discussions reportedly focused on the long-term direction of the Gulf Giants franchise and preparations for the upcoming ILT20 season.
Speaking after the announcement, Helmot said he was looking forward to contributing to the franchise’s future plans in UAE cricket. He also highlighted the importance of creating strong sporting systems and maintaining a long-term approach toward talent development and team growth.
According to Helmot, the conversations with the franchise leadership reflected a serious commitment toward building competitive teams and strengthening the overall cricket ecosystem connected to the league.
Franchise Management Welcomes New Appointment
Pranav Adani welcomed the Australian coach to the Adani Sportsline group and expressed confidence in his ability to guide the franchise in the coming season. He noted that Helmot’s experience in global T20 cricket and his understanding of modern franchise structures made him a valuable addition to the coaching setup.
The management also pointed to his emphasis on player development and team culture as important factors behind the decision. Officials believe his experience working across multiple cricket systems can help Gulf Giants maintain consistency in a highly competitive tournament.
Appreciation for Former Coach Jonathan Trott
Alongside the new appointment, Gulf Giants also acknowledged the contribution of former head coach Jonathan Trott. The franchise thanked the former England batter for his efforts during the previous season and extended best wishes for his future assignments.
Trott had guided the side during an important phase of the franchise’s development in the ILT20 competition. The management statement recognised his leadership role while confirming the transition toward a new coaching direction under Helmot.
With preparations already underway, Gulf Giants will now look to strengthen their squad and improve performances in the next edition of the UAE-based T20 league under their newly appointed head coach.
