West Bengal Politics – Leaders Trade Charges Amid Violence Claims

West Bengal Politics –   A fresh political dispute has emerged in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was attacked while travelling to submit a memorandum concerning incidents of post-election violence. His claims have sparked sharp reactions from political rivals, adding to the growing tension surrounding recent developments in the state.

Minister Rejects Allegations

West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh dismissed Kalyan Banerjee’s accusations, stating that available visuals and eyewitness accounts did not indicate any physical attack on the TMC parliamentarian. According to Ghosh, the incident was being portrayed in a manner that did not match what people had observed.

He argued that Banerjee’s version of events lacked credibility and claimed that similar controversies involving the TMC leader had surfaced in the past. Ghosh further remarked that Banerjee should remain cautious because, in his view, there is considerable public dissatisfaction directed toward both the MP and his party.

Kalyan Banerjee Alleges Assault

The controversy began on Sunday when Kalyan Banerjee claimed that he was targeted near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district. He had been travelling to raise concerns related to post-poll violence when the alleged incident occurred.

Describing the episode as a serious attack, the TMC leader alleged that workers associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) confronted and assaulted him outside the police station premises. He characterized the incident as an attempt on his life and demanded strict action against those responsible.

Incident Follows Attack on Abhishek Banerjee

The allegations surfaced shortly after another high-profile incident involving TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. Reports indicated that he was attacked while visiting families affected by political violence in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district.

According to party sources, Abhishek Banerjee was hit with bricks, stones, and eggs during the visit and suffered an injury near his eye. The incident triggered widespread political debate and prompted calls for a thorough investigation.

BJP Leader Responds

Reacting to the attack on Abhishek Banerjee, BJP leader Rajesh Kumar condemned the violence and reiterated that his party does not support such acts. He also pointed out that reports connected some individuals linked to the ruling party to the case, though investigations remain underway.

Regarding the allegations made by Kalyan Banerjee, Kumar stated that public resentment against the TMC leader had been visible for some time. He suggested that growing frustration among sections of the public could be contributing to the confrontational atmosphere seen in recent days.

Authorities Promise Action

Kumar said that law enforcement agencies would take appropriate action against anyone found responsible for violent activities, regardless of political affiliation. He emphasized that maintaining public order remains a priority and assured that offenders would face legal consequences.

Meanwhile, police have already taken action in connection with the attack on Abhishek Banerjee. Five individuals were arrested and later produced before a court in Baruipur. The accused have been identified as Akash Gayen, Kajal Das, Debashish Dutta, Nirmalya Sengupta, and Tapan Maiti.

Political Climate Remains Tense

The recent incidents are part of a broader series of confrontations reported after the state assembly election results. The political transition has been accompanied by allegations of violence from multiple sides, leading to heightened tensions across several districts.

As investigations continue, both ruling and opposition leaders remain engaged in a war of words over responsibility for the unrest, while authorities face increasing pressure to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents
