WeatherAlert – Heavy Rainfall Likely Across Tamil Nadu Until May 12
WeatherAlert – Tamil Nadu is expected to witness widespread rainfall over the coming days as weather officials have predicted continued showers across several districts until May 12. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai stated that changing atmospheric conditions over the Gulf of Mannar are likely to strengthen rain-bearing clouds across the state.

Heavy Rain Predicted in Western Districts
According to the latest forecast, districts located in the western and hilly regions of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Areas such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur and Dindigul are expected to experience moderate to heavy showers over the next few days. Officials noted that elevated regions and ghat sections may see repeated spells of rainfall due to the active weather system.
The Meteorological Department has also issued heavy rain alerts for multiple districts, warning residents to remain cautious in areas vulnerable to water accumulation and transport disruptions.
Southern Tamil Nadu Likely to Receive Intense Showers
Several southern districts are also expected to witness strong rainfall activity for at least the next two days. The forecast includes Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari among the districts likely to receive heavy showers. Thunderstorms may also develop in isolated places across southern Tamil Nadu during this period.
Weather experts explained that moisture-laden winds and upper-air circulation are contributing to unstable conditions, increasing the possibility of widespread rain and lightning activity in many regions.
Extended Forecast Indicates Continued Rainfall
In its extended outlook covering Friday through Monday, the weather department maintained that rainfall activity is likely to continue in several parts of the state. Districts including Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai and Theni may continue receiving heavy rain during this period.
Authorities have advised local administrations to stay prepared for possible waterlogging in low-lying areas, especially where drainage systems are weak or already affected by earlier rainfall.
Delta and Coastal Regions Also Under Watch
Apart from western Tamil Nadu, rain-bearing clouds are also expected to impact delta and coastal districts. Officials said Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari are likely to receive widespread rainfall between Friday and Monday.
The department warned that certain coastal pockets could witness sudden heavy downpours along with thunderstorms, leading to temporary traffic congestion and reduced visibility on roads.
Chennai May Get Relief From Heat
Meanwhile, Chennai and nearby suburban areas are also expected to experience changing weather conditions over the next few days. The forecast suggests isolated thunderstorms along with moderate rainfall in parts of the city. Cloud cover is expected to remain throughout the day, which may bring relief from the recent spell of hot and humid weather conditions.
Residents have been advised to monitor official weather bulletins regularly, particularly during periods of lightning and strong winds. Fishermen and people living near coastal areas have also been asked to stay alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management teams.
