Weather Update – Delhi Gets Relief as Rain and Gusty Winds Lower Heat Levels

Weather Update –  Residents of Delhi experienced a welcome change in weather conditions on Monday as light to moderate showers, accompanied by strong winds, swept across several parts of the city. The rainfall provided temporary relief from the persistent heat, leading to a slight drop in daytime temperatures across the national capital.

Delhi rain brings relief from heat

Rainfall Recorded Across Different Areas

Data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that Palam received the highest rainfall among the monitored locations, recording 9.0 mm of precipitation by 5:30 pm. Ayanagar registered 4.6 mm of rainfall during the same period. Meanwhile, only trace amounts of rain were reported at Safdarjung and Lodi Road observatories, while the Ridge station did not record any measurable rainfall.

Temperatures Remain Close to Seasonal Levels

Despite the changing weather pattern, maximum temperatures across Delhi largely remained within the normal range for this time of year. Safdarjung, considered the city’s primary weather station, recorded a daytime high of 37.5 degrees Celsius, which was slightly below the seasonal average. Palam reported the same maximum temperature, while Lodi Road and Ayanagar registered 37.8 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius respectively.

The highest temperature of the day was observed at the Ridge weather station, where the mercury climbed to 38.8 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest location among the city’s major monitoring centres.

Rain Brings Mild Cooling Effect

According to weather officials, rainfall and cloud cover contributed to a modest cooling trend across most parts of Delhi. The departure from normal maximum temperatures stood at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung and minus 1.7 degrees Celsius at Palam.

Meteorologists also noted that the change in maximum temperatures over the previous 24 hours remained slightly negative at most observation centres. This suggests that rain activity played a role in reducing daytime heat, even if the overall temperature drop was not substantial.

Night Temperatures Show Minor Variations

The minimum temperature at Safdarjung settled at 28.2 degrees Celsius, which was 0.7 degrees above the seasonal average. Other parts of the city recorded comparatively lower overnight temperatures.

Palam reported a minimum temperature of 25.4 degrees Celsius, while Ridge and Lodi Road registered 25.5 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius respectively. Ayanagar recorded an overnight low of 26.6 degrees Celsius.

Thunderstorms Likely to Continue

The IMD has predicted further weather activity for Tuesday, forecasting thunderstorms along with rain in several areas of the capital. The department expects the minimum temperature to hover around 27 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is likely to reach approximately 38 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts advise residents to remain alert for sudden changes in conditions, including brief spells of heavy rain and strong winds associated with thunderstorm activity.

Air Quality Remains in Moderate Category

Alongside the weather developments, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate range. According to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 151 at 4 pm on Monday.

Under CPCB standards, AQI values between 101 and 200 fall within the moderate category. Readings between 0 and 50 are classified as good, while higher ranges indicate progressively poorer air quality levels.
