Weather – Moderate Rain Expected in Chennai as Rain Activity Continues Across Tamil Nadu

Residents of Chennai may experience moderate rainfall during the evening or night on Saturday, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While the city is likely to remain warm and humid during the daytime, brief spells of rain are expected to bring temporary relief later in the day. Weather officials have also predicted continued rainfall accompanied by gusty winds in the Western Ghats districts through July 23.

Weather System Driving Rainfall

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said a trough stretching from the southwest Bay of Bengal to the northern Lakshadweep region is currently affecting weather conditions across Tamil Nadu and nearby areas. This atmospheric feature is expected to strengthen rainfall activity, particularly over the hill districts and regions along the Western Ghats.

Meteorologists believe the system will maintain favourable conditions for scattered showers over the next several days, with intermittent rain continuing in districts that have already been receiving rainfall recently.

Western Ghats Districts Likely to Receive More Showers

Rainfall is expected to remain most active over the Western Ghats, where moderate showers along with strong winds are forecast until July 23. These weather conditions are likely to benefit several hill districts and adjoining areas that depend on seasonal rainfall.

Officials noted that the pattern of intermittent rain is expected to continue, helping maintain moisture levels across these regions without the risk of widespread heavy downpours at this stage.

Rain Chances for Coastal and Interior Regions

North coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive moderate rainfall during the forecast period. However, weather conditions are expected to vary across the rest of the state.

Interior districts are likely to witness only isolated light showers over the coming days. Similar weather is forecast for the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, where light rainfall is expected to continue until July 23.

The IMD has clarified that there is currently no indication of widespread heavy rainfall across most parts of Tamil Nadu. Instead, scattered rain and cloudy skies are expected to dominate the weather pattern.

Chennai to Remain Warm Despite Evening Rain

For Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with the possibility of moderate rain during the evening or nighttime hours. Although rain may interrupt conditions later in the day, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high with persistent humidity.

The city’s maximum temperature is likely to touch around 38 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are expected to stay close to the seasonal average. Residents may continue to experience uncomfortable humidity despite the expected rainfall.

Interior Tamil Nadu to Experience Above-Normal Heat

While coastal districts are likely to record temperatures close to normal seasonal values, interior Tamil Nadu is expected to remain significantly warmer.

According to the RMC, maximum temperatures across several interior districts may stay up to three degrees Celsius above normal until July 21. As a result, heat conditions are likely to persist even as isolated rain develops in some locations.

Authorities Advise Residents to Monitor Forecasts

Weather officials have encouraged residents, particularly those living in districts expected to experience gusty winds and intermittent rain, to keep track of updated forecasts issued by the Meteorological Department.

Local authorities are also expected to closely monitor changing weather conditions as the trough continues to influence rainfall and wind activity across Tamil Nadu during the coming week.
