Weather Alert – Delhi Braces for Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Under Fresh Weather System

Weather Alert –  Residents of Delhi may witness another shift in weather conditions on Saturday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the national capital. The advisory highlights the possibility of scattered thunderstorms, strong winds, brief rain spells, and thunderstorm-related disturbances later in the day. The change is linked to a new western disturbance influencing weather patterns across northwest India and the Delhi-NCR region.

IMD Issues Advisory for Changing Weather Conditions

According to the IMD, the city is expected to remain under partly cloudy skies through most of the day. Meteorologists have indicated that thunderstorm activity could develop during the afternoon and evening hours. Along with lightning and cloud build-up, isolated locations may receive light rainfall.

The department has cautioned people to remain alert, particularly during periods of intense wind activity. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour in some areas, which could affect outdoor activities and local travel conditions.

Temperatures Likely to Stay Moderate

The latest weather outlook suggests that Delhi will continue to experience relatively pleasant temperatures compared with the intense heat recorded earlier this month. The minimum temperature is expected to remain close to 23 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach around 37 degrees Celsius.

The cooler conditions are expected to offer temporary relief to residents who have endured prolonged spells of above-normal temperatures and heatwave-like conditions in recent weeks.

Friday’s Weather Marked a Noticeable Change

The yellow alert follows a significant improvement in weather conditions observed on Friday morning. Many parts of Delhi woke up to cloudy skies and cooler air after overnight rainfall brought down temperatures considerably.

Data recorded at the Safdarjung weather station showed the minimum temperature settling at 22.8 degrees Celsius. This reading was notably lower than the seasonal average and represented a sharp decline compared with the previous day, reflecting the impact of changing atmospheric conditions across the region.

Western Disturbance Influencing Northwest India

Weather experts have linked the recent changes to a fresh western disturbance moving across northwest India. Such systems often transport moisture into the atmosphere and create instability, leading to cloud formation, thunderstorms, and intermittent rainfall.

The current disturbance has increased moisture levels over Delhi and nearby regions, creating favourable conditions for weather activity over the weekend. Meteorologists say these developments are typical during the transition period before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.

Relief From Prolonged Heatwave Conditions

The IMD noted that western disturbances frequently contribute to fluctuations in weather during the pre-monsoon season. These systems can trigger thunderstorms, dust-laden winds, and occasional rain while helping lower daytime temperatures.

Similar weather events have been recorded across Delhi-NCR in recent days, bringing short-term relief from persistent hot and dry conditions. The latest spell is also expected to keep temperatures under control over the next few days, reducing the severity of heat-related discomfort.

Residents Advised to Monitor Forecasts

Officials have urged residents to stay informed through regular weather updates, as atmospheric conditions can change quickly during thunderstorm activity. People are advised to exercise caution while travelling or spending time outdoors when strong winds and lightning are forecast.

The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather situation and will issue further updates if conditions require additional advisories in the coming days.
