WaterCrisis – Delhi Residents Struggle as Jal Board Helplines Fail

WaterCrisis –  Residents across several parts of Delhi are facing growing frustration as many helpline numbers issued by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) are reportedly not working, making it difficult for people to register complaints related to water supply disruptions during the peak summer season.

Residents Report Repeated Failure of Helpline Numbers

A recent check of the contact numbers listed on the Delhi Jal Board’s official website revealed that most of the helplines were either unreachable or inactive. Out of 28 numbers available for different city zones, only two reportedly connected successfully, while several others remained switched off, unanswered, or failed to connect altogether.

For many households dealing with irregular water supply, the absence of a dependable complaint system has added to daily hardship. Residents say repeated attempts to contact officials over the phone have produced little result, forcing some people to visit local offices personally to seek assistance.

Asha Narayan, a resident of east Delhi, said her family had spent days trying to reach officials through the listed numbers but received no response. According to her, visiting the department office became the only available option after repeated calls failed.

Complaints Continue Despite Emails and Letters

Citizens from different localities have also claimed that written complaints sent through email and traditional mail have not received satisfactory replies. A resident from south Delhi said several helpline numbers appeared invalid, adding that repeated messages and written complaints regarding water issues in the area had gone unanswered for weeks.

The situation has raised concerns among residents who depend heavily on public communication systems during periods of water shortage and extreme temperatures. Many people believe that the absence of responsive helplines is making an already difficult situation worse.

Social Media Responses Seen as Inconsistent

Although the Delhi Jal Board remains active on social media platforms such as X, several residents claim that online responses are inconsistent. According to citizens, some complaints receive quick attention while many others are ignored despite regular follow-ups and public tagging of officials.

Residents argue that social media cannot replace a functioning public helpline system, especially for senior citizens and those without regular internet access. They say telephone support remains the most practical and immediate option for a large section of the population.

Water Shortages Increase Pressure on Local Communities

The impact of the communication breakdown is reportedly being felt more strongly in areas already facing water shortages. Abrar Ahmad, a resident of Old Delhi, said the failure of the complaint system has left many citizens uncertain about where to seek help during emergencies.

He explained that residents in the Jama Masjid area have been dealing with serious water scarcity for more than two weeks. According to him, families are struggling to manage daily needs amid intense summer heat, while the lack of official response has increased anxiety among local residents.

Citizens say the current conditions are especially challenging for elderly people, women, and those unable to travel long distances to government offices. Many believe that immediate restoration of functioning helpline services is necessary to ensure quicker response to public grievances.

Delhi Jal Board Yet to Issue Detailed Clarification

Despite growing complaints from residents, the Delhi Jal Board has not publicly clarified why a large number of its helpline numbers are reportedly inactive. Attempts to seek an official response have so far not produced a detailed explanation.

Officials reportedly shared an email address for communication, but no formal statement had been issued at the time of reporting. Meanwhile, residents continue to demand a more reliable and accessible grievance system as the city experiences increasing pressure on water resources during the summer months.
