WaterConservation – Rapid Progress Seen in Jaladhara Works Across NTR District

WaterConservation – A large-scale effort to strengthen water resources in NTR district is moving ahead swiftly under the State government’s Jaladhara-Jalaharathi programme. Designed to secure long-term water availability, the initiative is being implemented through a focused 100-day action plan, with district authorities reporting steady advancement across multiple projects.

Strong Push for Water Security Measures

The programme has been introduced with a clear emphasis on preserving water bodies and improving groundwater reserves. Officials say the work aligns closely with the government’s broader goal of ensuring sustainable water access for both agricultural and domestic use.

Out of the 197 projects approved under the scheme, work has already commenced on 88 sites. These projects are currently at different stages of execution, reflecting a coordinated effort by district teams to maintain momentum within the planned timeline.

Administrative Oversight and Key Activities

District Collector G Lakshmisha is actively supervising the implementation process. Regular reviews and on-ground monitoring are helping address challenges quickly and keep the programme on track.

Several critical activities are being prioritised, including the removal of silt from tanks, repair of sluices, and restoration of feeder channels. These steps are essential to improve water storage capacity and ensure smooth water flow during the rainy season.

Officials noted that such interventions not only enhance the efficiency of existing water bodies but also extend their usability throughout the year.

Scientific Approach to Groundwater Recharge

In addition to traditional restoration work, the district administration is adopting scientific methods to conserve water. Structures such as recharge pits and percolation tanks are being constructed to capture rainwater and allow it to seep into the ground.

These measures are expected to significantly improve groundwater levels over time, reducing dependence on external water sources and helping prevent the depletion of wells and borewells.

Revival of Traditional Water Bodies

A major component of the programme involves reviving village tanks, which have historically been central to rural livelihoods. Authorities have identified 439 tanks across the district for rejuvenation efforts.

By restoring these water bodies, the administration aims to ensure a reliable supply of water for irrigation and daily use. Officials highlighted that maintaining these tanks in functional condition is vital for sustaining agriculture, especially in regions dependent on seasonal rainfall.

Role in Agriculture and Ecosystem Balance

Water bodies play a key role beyond irrigation. They support livestock needs and contribute to maintaining ecological balance by sustaining local biodiversity.

Experts involved in the programme pointed out that healthy water systems help stabilise rural ecosystems. They also reduce the risk of water scarcity during dry periods, thereby supporting farmers and rural communities.

Community Participation as a Key Factor

Authorities have stressed that public involvement is crucial to the programme’s success. Local residents, elected representatives, and irrigation groups are actively participating in various stages of the initiative.

The planning process is backed by data analysis covering the past decade, allowing officials to identify priority areas and design effective solutions. This includes strategies such as linking water bodies, improving storage capacity, and introducing village-level water budgeting practices.

Collector Lakshmisha expressed confidence that the initiative will deliver lasting benefits. By combining traditional knowledge with modern techniques, the programme is expected to create a resilient water management system.

Officials believe that these efforts will not only address current water challenges but also secure resources for future generations. The ongoing work in NTR district is being seen as a model for sustainable water conservation practices at the regional level.
