WasteManagement – Nashik Civic Body Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Garbage Dumping
WasteManagement – The Nashik Municipal Corporation has stepped up efforts to eliminate illegal garbage dumping across the New Nashik (Cidco) region by launching a focused enforcement campaign. Authorities have warned that individuals and businesses violating waste disposal regulations could face penalties of up to ₹10,000, while serious offences may also attract criminal proceedings under applicable laws.
Special Enforcement Drive Across Cidco
The Solid Waste Management Department, operating under the New Nashik divisional office, has initiated the campaign with the objective of removing garbage black spots and improving overall cleanliness. The action is being carried out under the direction of municipal officer Dr. Avesh Palod, while divisional officer Nanasaheb Salve is overseeing the implementation of the initiative.
To strengthen enforcement, the civic body has established a dedicated flying squad headed by divisional sanitation inspector Sanjay Gangurde. The team is conducting continuous patrols across different parts of the Cidco area to identify and prevent violations related to waste disposal.
Multiple Waste-Related Violations Under Watch
Municipal officials said the inspection teams are monitoring several types of civic violations that contribute to environmental pollution and public inconvenience. These include dumping household waste in public places, using prohibited plastic carry bags, failing to separate wet and dry waste before disposal, abandoning construction and demolition debris on roads or vacant plots, and disposing of waste in rivers, drains, or streams.
The authorities are also taking action against people who burn garbage in open spaces, a practice that contributes to air pollution and poses health risks to nearby residents.
The enforcement squad consists of sanitation inspectors, sanitation workers and supervisors responsible for waste collection vehicles, enabling coordinated inspections throughout the division.
Heavy Penalties and Possible Criminal Cases
The Nashik Municipal Corporation has made it clear that violations of waste management regulations will no longer be treated lightly. According to sanitation inspector Sanjay Gangurde, dumping waste in rivers, public roads, gardens, vacant land or other public spaces can lead to fines of ₹10,000 or more under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and the Solid Waste Management Rules.
He added that authorities may also register criminal cases in serious instances where violations are repeated or cause significant environmental damage. Officials have appealed to residents and commercial establishments to cooperate with the campaign by following proper waste disposal practices and supporting efforts to maintain a cleaner city.
More Than ₹1 Lakh Recovered Through Enforcement
The special drive has already produced visible results. Between June 1 and June 20, 2026, the enforcement team collected more than ₹1 lakh in penalties from individuals and businesses found violating municipal waste management rules.
Officials said many offenders attempt to dump garbage along roadsides or on open land during late-night hours to avoid detection. However, the flying squad has been maintaining regular surveillance to curb such activities.
During the last two days alone, several people caught illegally disposing of waste were each fined ₹10,000. Municipal authorities believe continued inspections and strict enforcement will discourage repeat offences while encouraging greater public participation in maintaining cleanliness across the city.
Residents have once again been urged to dispose of waste responsibly, follow segregation guidelines, and avoid littering public spaces to help create a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
