Vaccine Partnership – South Africa’s Deputy President, Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, has highlighted the growing importance of collaboration between India and South Africa in the healthcare sector during his visit to Hyderabad. The senior leader met with Lakshminarayana Neti, Chief Operating Officer of Biological E Limited, to discuss opportunities for cooperation in vaccine development and pharmaceutical innovation.
Focus on Expanding Vaccine Manufacturing
During the meeting, Mashatile stressed that South Africa is working to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and increase local manufacturing capabilities. He noted that partnerships with experienced global pharmaceutical companies are essential to achieving these goals and ensuring long-term healthcare security across the African continent.
The discussions included potential cooperation on technology transfer related to the whole-cell 6-in-1 vaccine. According to Mashatile, such collaboration could play a significant role in supporting future immunisation efforts and improving access to essential vaccines in several African nations.
Encouraging Indian Investment in South Africa
The Deputy President also encouraged Indian pharmaceutical companies to explore investment opportunities in South Africa. He said stronger business engagement between the two countries could help boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance healthcare production capabilities.
Mashatile emphasized that South Africa views India as a reliable partner with extensive expertise in healthcare, manufacturing, and innovation. Expanding investment and industrial cooperation, he added, would benefit both countries while contributing to broader regional development goals.

The Hyderabad engagement formed part of Mashatile’s official working visit to India, which is focused on deepening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations. Earlier in the week, Mashatile held talks with Indian Vice President CP Radhakrishnan in New Delhi. The meeting brought together senior representatives from both governments to discuss economic cooperation, trade opportunities, and future strategic collaboration.
