UrbanDevelopment – Sandhu Calls for Collective Action to Shape Delhi’s Future
UrbanDevelopment – Delhi’s future development took centre stage on Friday as Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu highlighted the need for collective efforts to transform the national capital into a more sustainable, inclusive, and people-focused city. Addressing students and faculty members at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sandhu described Delhi as a city that reflects India’s diversity, ambition, and resilience.

Focus on Sustainability and Urban Challenges
During his address, Sandhu said Delhi is currently facing several pressing urban issues that require coordinated planning and long-term solutions. He pointed to rapid urbanisation, environmental concerns, population growth, transportation difficulties, and resource management as major areas demanding immediate attention.
According to him, sustainability should remain the foundation of Delhi’s future growth model. He stressed that any city aiming for global recognition must tackle environmental concerns with seriousness and urgency. Measures such as improving air quality, restoring water bodies, increasing green spaces, strengthening waste management systems, expanding renewable energy use, and encouraging sustainable transportation were among the priorities he outlined.
Sandhu noted that these efforts are essential not only for environmental protection but also for improving the quality of life for residents across the capital.
Inclusive Growth Must Remain a Priority
The Lieutenant Governor also spoke about the importance of ensuring that development benefits every section of society. He said a truly modern and global city should provide equal opportunities and accessible growth for all communities.
Highlighting inclusion as the second key pillar for Delhi’s transformation, Sandhu said urban progress should not be limited to infrastructure alone. Instead, policies and planning should focus on making the city more accessible, equitable, and supportive for people from all social and economic backgrounds.
He added that development should create opportunities that allow citizens to participate equally in the city’s economic and social progress.
Preserving Delhi’s Cultural Identity
Speaking about Delhi’s rich heritage, Sandhu emphasised the need to protect the city’s cultural identity while pursuing modernisation. He said Delhi’s historical and cultural legacy forms an essential part of its character and should remain preserved even as the city expands and evolves.
According to him, cultural preservation must go hand in hand with urban development so that future generations continue to remain connected to the city’s historical roots and traditions.
Innovation and Economic Expansion Highlighted
Sandhu also underlined Delhi’s potential to emerge as a leading centre for innovation and economic activity. He said the city has the capacity to strengthen its position not only as India’s administrative capital but also as a major destination for startups, tourism, hospitality, education, creative industries, and the wider service economy.
He noted that technology-driven growth and innovation can play a significant role in shaping Delhi’s future economy and attracting investment opportunities.
Compassion Described as the Most Important Pillar
Among the five pillars he discussed, Sandhu described compassion as the most crucial element of urban progress. He said a city loses its true essence if development takes place without humanity and empathy.
He stressed the importance of creating a safer and more supportive environment for women, senior citizens, children, workers, and underprivileged communities. He also highlighted the need for improved accessibility for persons with disabilities and stronger social support systems within the city.
According to him, Delhi’s future should be built around policies that prioritise people’s wellbeing alongside infrastructure and economic growth.
Sandhu Recalls His Days at JNU
Reflecting on his connection with JNU, Sandhu said returning to the university campus was a deeply meaningful experience for him. An alumnus of the School of International Studies, he described the institution as more than just an academic centre.
He said the university played a significant role in shaping his ideas and perspectives during some of the most formative years of his life. Addressing the gathering, he recalled the intellectual environment of the campus and its contribution to his personal and professional journey.
