Birsa Munda’s contribution was highlighted during the ‘Janjati Sanskritik Samagam’, where Shah described the tribal leader as a powerful symbol of unity and resistance during the colonial era. Referring to the ongoing celebrations marking the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, he said the legendary figure inspired generations of tribal communities to defend their traditions, forests, and faith.

Birsa Munda’s Movement Remembered

Speaking at the event, Shah said the Ulgulan movement led by Birsa Munda had posed a serious challenge to British administration during the freedom struggle. According to him, the movement became a strong voice against exploitation and external control over tribal lands and customs.

He noted that Birsa Munda managed to spread his message far beyond present-day Jharkhand despite the lack of modern communication systems during that period. Shah said the tribal leader’s ideas reached several regions, including Gujarat and other parts of India, encouraging indigenous groups to remain connected to their roots and cultural values.

The Union minister stated that Birsa Munda consistently urged tribal communities to safeguard their religion, land, and forests from outside influence. He added that the freedom fighter’s leadership helped create awareness among tribal populations about protecting their identity and traditional way of life.

Tribal Culture Linked Closely With Nature

During his address, Shah emphasized the deep relationship tribal communities share with forests, rivers, and hills. He said these natural elements are not merely sources of livelihood for indigenous people but also hold spiritual and cultural importance.

According to Shah, tribal societies have preserved traditions of coexistence and environmental balance for generations. He described their lifestyle as one of the most sustainable social systems in the world, noting that many tribal customs continue to promote harmony with nature.

He further said tribal communities have maintained the idea of unity in diversity without depending on formal laws or written systems. Their traditions, he remarked, naturally encourage social balance, cooperation, and respect for the environment.

Focus on Indigenous Identity and Traditions

The Home Minister also underlined the importance of preserving tribal heritage in modern times. He said indigenous communities continue to play a significant role in protecting India’s cultural diversity and ecological traditions.

Shah stated that water bodies, forests, and mountains remain central to the faith and daily lives of tribal groups. He added that tribal practices reflect values of collective living and mutual respect, which have helped preserve their identity over centuries.

The event brought attention to the growing recognition of tribal leaders in India’s freedom movement and cultural history. Birsa Munda, widely regarded as one of the most influential tribal icons in the country, continues to inspire discussions around indigenous rights, environmental conservation, and social unity.

As the country commemorates his 150th birth anniversary, leaders and community representatives are expected to organise more cultural and educational programmes highlighting his contribution to India’s history and tribal empowerment.
